I had decided, based on the citizen reviews I have read here, that iGuidance was the best software to get for my new HP hx2495 pocket PC/Holuz GPSlim 236 rig. But I asked at the iGuidance website about map updates, and they said the Navteq maps are only updated once a year, are not available online, and cost about $80 per year even for those infreguent revisions.
I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but here in Atlanta streets change monthly and establishments change daily. It would not be long before any map was useless except for main roads.
In the collective experience of this group, what is the best base map format to use, both for initial use and subsequent revisions?
Thanks. |

Welcome to our world. Different from reality, the map data world indeed moves in one to two year jumps. A map that you buy today is guaranteed to be out of date by at least two years, sometimes even more.
There has been lots of talks about more frequent map updates and quicker turnarounds but so far these were just talks. It is also a question of money - would you be willing to pay for quarterly updates at 40 USD each?
iGuidance has the latest NavTeq maps - this is as good as it gets for Navteq right now. If you want you can compare the TeleAtlas data for your area, and then decide if a TeleAtlas based program (such as TomTom) would be the better fit.
It's not a question if a map is out of date, the question is how much. _________________ Lutz

I appreciate the difficulty of keeping them current, especially the POI stuff. I have a Garmin 276C I use as a marine chartplotter and the navigation charts seem to be kept up to date pretty well.
I will see if I can compare the two map formats and then decide.
Thanks. |
