At this year's CeBIT most of the stuff we saw was not really new, rather some re-worked versions or marketing "improvements". However, there was one exception. It's name: iGO 2006.

This review is the combined work of "alix776" and "lbendlin" and while we worked on it together we didn't always have the same opinion on it. We'll be marking throughout the text where we disagree or focus on different aspects.

So, enjoy the show.

Well,

First I'd like to say that I really appreciate your efforts, and thoroughly enjoyed your review. I have my disagreements with some of your comments, and shall refer to them in a later post.

Second, I can tell you that IGO is all the rage here in Israel and it seems the software has conquered the local market.

This is certainly due to the fast and impressive graphics, as well as to the myriad of options available to the user.

Other contributing factors are the impressive responsiveness of the company's support people, especially Ori lavee, the Business Development Manager, who apparently never sleeps.....

The competition, mainly Destinator PN, has been non-existant in the past year or so, while the local distributor was changed and left the field to IGO and its predecessor.

The software does have its faults and problems (don't they all), and it seems most of them (as reported in the various Israel forums) are related to the route calculation engine, which every now and then produces exotic routings, map errors (not the company's fault) and the POI options.

But generally the software is very highly regarded.

Apparently both TMC and proximity warnings are available under the MIOMAP brand, and shall be released in the regular version in 4Q06.

Further, the company's decision to market the software on an SD card has been an issue here as well. Until last week, the company had agreed to install the software on customers' own SD cards for free, but they have changed this policy, and from this week this service will cost about $40 (This service is available in Israel, I don't know whether this will be available elsewhere).

Have seen the i-GO branded as MioMap with Camera Alerts and TMC, it seems that they have already done it all..
http://www.mio-tech.be/products/Personal_Navigation_Devices/c710/

They carry exclusive coverage of Eastern Europe, maps which others do not have access to,

It looks like those "Game Boys" from Hungary are going to bite a decent market share, similare to what happend in Israel and Hungary.

Others do have maps of Eastern Europe too (we are testing them) but certainly not of the quality that the iGO maps show. We'll see how quickly iGO can add important holiday destinations such as Turkey and Greece etc.

After couple of years using Tomtom I was desperatelly waiting for Teleatlas to supply them reliable maps for eastern europe. On my trips to Czech republic I used Tomtom and the coverage and map detail and the navigation itself seems to be really usable. Czech republic is now 99% covered by Teleatlas, I think. i-Go is using local map suppliers for Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, BiH, Poland. Teleatlas for Czech republic and western european countries... Map quality and detail for EE coutries is really very good. Tested on recent vacation in Croatia, going through Hungary and part of Slovakia :-) Voice guidance is a bit chatty, but accurate. What I miss is "turn now" command, everything else is fine. If you get used to the interface, it's navigation of equal quality as Tomtom is. And, which is most important thing for me, I don't have to use two (or more) different navigation systems accross Europe... Or switch maps on borders... This investment was really worth the money! Smile

Great review. Smile

Must agree that the major sticking points for me with this software are:

. The roundabout issue.
. Lack of POI warnings.
. Dodgy interface in places.

Other than that, its one nice piece of software.

It just seems strange that when the MIOMAP version of the software is already out we have to wait so long for iGO PDA to get POI warnings, TMC and a better interface.

Any plans to review the MIO 510 or 710, both of which have TMC and cam warnings?

They didn't provide one for the UK yet. All I know is that it is in the upper range (also due to the fact that a mini-SD card is included).

TMC works throughout Europe* – and the messages are always shown in your own language.

*Except France and the UK

I would say this shows TMC does work in the UK, picture not taken on one of these devices though, it is from the inbuilt car set-up:

It is probably the licence issue where by the data is not free in the UK that has caused them to put the note on the site - Mike
