Why do I get the most Ridicules routes? I navigate to a post code and I have TT910 preferance set at the fastest, Iget a route taking me via small country lanes which takes double the time. What I am doing wrong? Please help as it is driving me crazy. |

I have the same problem:
My Tom Tom is fine for ordinary navigation, but I have a fairly large motorhome and the Tom Tom will insist on sending me down unclassified roads which aren't suitable for a large vehicle.
I have E-mailed TomTom but they haven't really given a logical reply.
What I would like to do is tell the damn thing to stay on A and B roads until close to the destination. There are options to select walking routes (yeh, that will get used a lot) and bicycle routes (ditto), but apparently no option for selecting main roads only.
One suggestion from The Link was to select the route and then go through the route deselecting any unclassified roads, but that would probably take longer than driving there!

I totally agree. It should be possible to force it to stay off unclassified roads until only absolutely neccessary to finally reach the destination.
If you try deselecting any unclassified roads it will choose a whole lot more alternative unclassified roads. You can carry on for quite a while like this until it finally decides there is no alternative but to route on main roads.
The only other way is to select relevant via points on main roads to change the route. This usually requires local knowledge in which case you wouldn't need the thing anyway.
All in all the TomTom routing is a joke, unfortunately most of the other navigation packages are the same. The only one I have found to give slightly better routes is Navigon but this is extremely difficult to use.
In the 21st century is this really the best that can be achieved.

TomTom's routing has got worse with later versions of software.
V3 allowed you to select the preferred road types, along with the way routes were calculated.
V5 dropped all this and I was very concerned, but luckily the routes generated were still go.
Then comes V6, routing has taken a BIG step backwards, now TomTom believes that central London is a better route than the M25.
I logged a call with TT support and they said an update would improve things, but could not guarantee a fix. Having delt with TT support my 910 was returned until this problem is fixed. |

at the moment yes it is the best that can be acheived this is problem with all satnav that it will take you down what you might term narrow roads this is where the driver has to make a choice between going down a road or checking the route in map mode of the device.
it has to be said that any sat nav is designed primerily for cars only and this is very apparent for tomtom even garmin in truck mode usually produces similar routes to tomtom in limited speed the can be said for iGO as well though my preferance is for iGO's routing at the moment it seams the pick of the bunch
for tomtom if your going to a rural area then there is a good chance that you will get sent down a narrow road
it a driver aid after all

Its because they dont have the wit to produce a 'prefer major roads' option, instead of giving us, for example, the totally useless 'shortest route'.
There are many reasons why the option of a route that kept you on major roads (without doing stupid detours) would be a good idea, for example minimise the 'rat run' problem, make navigation easier, good for drivers of oversize vehicles, good for passengers who get car sick, an dprobably often quicker as well.

My gripe is that it is the best so far that has been achieved but not the best that could be achieved. I think it is a case of could do much better. A few more routing options would help for a start. How about a button to avoid unclassified roads, another to prefer 'A' Roads etc.
Now checking the route in map mode of the device is actually quite difficult, particularly with TomTom, since the route completely covers the roads in question. So without tapping on each road to determine it's type there's no way of telling where you're being sent. So a simple button to either temporarily hide or make transparent the overlaid route so you could actually see the type of road would be easy enough to implement.
All in all a case of could do much better.

Sorry, second time tonight I've had to disagree.
It ISN'T the best that can be achieved as it is accepted that the routing has got WORSE on the newer TomToms.
As others have said, I would far prefer that TT spent a bit of effort producing some more routing options and sorting out other problems with the core functionality, rather than implementing iPod control and other non-essential extras.
It can't be that hard to do, as the system already must know the road classifications in order to work out its "fastest" routes. |

The Garmin Nuvi is just as bad. I live in a narrow country lane, and it's about 400 yards to the nearest decent road (a slightly wider country lane). My Nuvi insists on taking me the opposite direction on the really narrow lane, irrespective of where my final destination is.
I even asked it to calculate a route from my house to the not so narrow country lane by the shortest route. You guessed it, it took me in the opposite direction on a round the houses tour, taking 3 miles instead of the 400 yards if it had gone the right way!! Very annoying. |
