I3 won't work on batteries

As the subject title explains I can't get my I3 to work from batteries. When it's plugged into the 12v socket in the car it works no problems.

I'm using NMH Rechargeables that have just been recharged this morning and they work in other devices. I've tried with regular alkaline batteries as well but no luck.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

I would be very grateful for any info.

It should work on batteries, albeit not for too long as it goes through them very quickly, make sure you have told the device you are using NiMH batteries though go to Settings/ System/ Battery Type and you can select either Alkaline or NiMH. Mike

I have set it to NMH batteries, but stll no luck running on batteries. The journey home was ok via the 12v socket.

If your unit is running off in car power lead but also with batteries in and you pull out the power lead what happens?

Might sound like an obvious question I guess but give it a try and report back.

Pull out the power lead and zilch, it goes off. I have the batteries in correctly.

In which case the device is faulty, I would return it to the supplier for a replacement, you should be able to use the device on batteries alone, it just costs quite a bit. Mike

The only problem is that I bought the last one in the Woolworths near to where I work and because I love the bloody thing so much I don't want my money back, I want a replacement. I don't think Woolworths will have a replacement.

Would I be able to go direct through Garmin?

Got a fresh pair of Duracell, popped the settings back to alakaline and bingo, no problems it works when the external power is removed.

It doesn't seem to like my rechargeables Energizer 2500mah for some reason, although they work fine in my digital camera, 'tis weird.

I'll just have to use Duracells instead of my rechargeables.

Try wrapping the rechargeable cell bodies with tape (insulation or sellotape will suffice) recharge the cells then re-fit and try again, its a common problem with these type of batteries that they short out when packed into a tight space (the i3 is a tight space, and if the batteries touch they will short out and discharge very quickly) - I have experianced solder melt on a few occasions when using NiMH cells, they need to be treated with caution, once insullated they should be OK - Out of interest what make are the cells you were using, Sanyo??

your batteries are knackered i use batteries on a daily basis and they last for over 8 hrs

Blimey, Batteries catching fire!

I'm using Energizer rechargeables, not sure who makes them. If it's such a problem I think I'll stick to the non-rechargeable type.

I use Enegizer 2100mah but somtimes the unit will switch off even thougth they are fully charged. The solution was to reduce the brightness down to level 2 and now i get about 5 hours.
