Dumb question of the day....

I've scan read this forum... had anyone upgraded then forced a hard reset?

For clarity

Assume the unit is 2.7 V8 Maps.
Back up faves
Upgrade 2.7 - 3.10
Force Hard reset (I've seent he button combo on here somewhere... I think its turn on unit while holding in <-- and Wheel... please verify)
Reinstall faves.

If your unit performance with firmware 2.90 was far from satisfactory then loading 3.0 or 3.1 will make no difference as no changes to the fimware apart from audio updates occured.

The reset procedure you quote is correct as is the need to back up your favorites carring out this procedure after installing 3.1 will make absolutely no difference to the unit.

I have tried all the firmware and always go back to Beta 2.82 Thumbs Up the poi problem is not an issue for me.

Yes i did just that, when i bought my unit i had version 2.9, i updated to 3.0 then when installing version 3.1 i decided to install the extra language packs, which seemed to take forever... so i switched my unit off during the instalation of languages then hard reset it, luckily i have still not encoutered any problems !

Well after 700 miles of testing of 3.10 i had 1 crash in Birmingham (of the i3 not my car) after i persisted in going the way i wanted to, not they way it wanted too. This required a switch off and on again. Other than that it seems to calculate routes faster than 3.00 and 2.90, but the other issues are teh same, such as the inaccuracy, which i only really notice in town. and the occasional phantom recalculation.

got an email from tech support suggesting a hard reset and reinstalling 3.10, so i did that, and after 600 miles testing it seems to be exactly the same as before!

So i would say don't worry about the hard reset.

alas POI is an issue for me, so I'll stick with 2.7 until you guys says its a goer.

I have tried 3.10 and so far in track up map display mode it seems to update at the same rate as 2.70.

However, yesterday I did get multiple freezes when trying to calculate a route. It stuck on 0% but strangely the map could be seen behind the dialog box and it was updating OK.

Maybe the cause of the freeze is somewhere in the route calculation code?

The only fix I could find was to force a power off by holding down the power button. I had to do this 3 times until eventually I got a successful route calculation. Since then it's been OK again - weird.

I think I'll keep 3.10 for a few more days before deciding whether to reurn to 2.7.

I've had exactly the same thing happen twice recently using 2.7. But I had never experienced this until I installed 3.1 and then reverted to 2.7 Confused

It really begins to sound like the 'hard' reset is pretty damned 'soft', unless it's a POI.

Having read the posts on this topic, I'm happy that I've never loaded an upgrade since v2.7. My i3 has functioned without problems to an acceptable standard (for me).

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Smile"

Let's hope that, sooner or later, Garmin's software programmers will manage to issue an upgrade that works. Confused

Spot on. I haven't loaded newer firmware since 2.7 either and my unit has took me all over the place without issue.

I find reading the feedback on here a good way to save myself from wasting time upgrading to crappy versions.

Same here, I'm on 3.1 and yesterday gave a it a good test by going to Holmfirth, West Yorks. It was all going well until it decided to lose its satellite fix and wouldn't find it again, had to stop for about 5 minutes until it locked on again, then it did a couple of random re-calculating moves, even though I was on the correct road, then the position arrow on the screen was about 3/4 inch from the road i was on. All very odd, but at least it got me there and back, but i'm worried about going back to 2.7 incase I have the troubles others seem to have when they go back. Confused
