|
|
HI there I apoligise if this has been covered previously but i couldnt find it on the Forums.
Ok Now that the new Airport is open at Doncaster I thought I would add it to my POI for the Tom Tom.
However when I browse through my POI the airports wont show so that I can add it. (ie in as in from the location where I was, at the airport)
Now I can add it as a favourite but i really want to add it to the poi catergory not as a favourite.
Anybody got any ideas.
Thanks _________________ TomTom 300

You can only add POI to the Custom POI that are loaded to your device, if you take a look at the POI downloads from this site you will find airports, and Doncaster is already included in the download. Mike |

I went ahead and tried that Mike it wasnt correct as the POI were all over the place I had two Poi then loaded for Manchester and Doncaster Airport both apart from each other......not by far perhaps a mile or so but still not quite right and i guess the planes landing would be a give away as to the true location but for now I dont think I will use that one as it stands at the moment _________________ TomTom 300

The problem is that you cannot modfy the POI categories that come pre-loaded in the Tomtom. The only way you can do it is to create another POI category yourself and add it in there. Unless someone knows how to modify the pre-loaded pOI categories??

No, you can't modify Tom Tom pre-installed POIs. You have the facility to add custom POIs, I think it's 39 different custom groups you can add and you can have as many POIs in each group as you like (up to the memory limit of your card). To avoid the double hits, you would need to disable the pre-installed Airport POI, using Change Preferences / Manage POI / Enable Disable POI, then uncheck the Airport POI and check the installed custom Airport POI group (whatever you have called it). _________________ Tommo...

This appears the only problem with downloading other peoples POI groups. As they are compiled by one person, you only have that person's view as to where the POI is. A simple error in co-ordinates can mean many miles off course. On the flip side, the speed camera POI groups from this site are continually tweaked by the staff, having received updates/additions/detetions from various members. Ideally a site with lots of POI groups, which could be managed, with input from users, would be a great idea. A bit labour intensive though and I don't think many people would want to run such a site. You could always offer _________________ Tommo...

Are you saying that the positions of the inbuilt TomTom supplied ones were better? If so, that's quite unusual! For example the inbuilt Petrol Station ones are dreadful, many missing, on the wrong side of dual carriageways, or in places that have been untouched common land for hundreds of years.
At least with a third party set, you can add any that you find are wrong: (Preferences/Manage POI/ add POI / select "GPS position" when you are at the front entrance) and remove the old one (Preferences/Manage POI/ delete POI).
The website you get it from would probably appreciate a copy of the updated file too. |

I got them from Here but it is a point to consider about editiing them though I might consider that in the future.
Also to answer your intial question yes Tom Tom POI were better than the ones from this site as they were more accurate. _________________ TomTom 300

The Tom Tom ones were at the Airport the ones that have been submitted from another person on here were either a half a mile out up t a couple of miles out .
Though I did only look locally as i wouldnt normally be going to another airport further away in my own car.
Thats when Dad's Taxi service comes in too play _________________ TomTom 300

The Airports POI on this site was compiled in 2003. I don't know the method used in collating the data, but I know it is difficult to get accurate locations from just 1 source of information. Most are done by using the Postcode. A good starting point.
The other point is, where do you put the location point. Car Park, entrance road, middle of a runway. The choice is not always right for everyone.
I know from my own experience that even a Postcode from the 'owners' information has to be checked. As many as 10% can be either wrongly entered, or have recently been changed.
Checking, and the re-checking, is what takes up most of my time. Even then I get it wrong.;) _________________ Richard
