|
|
Just bought a 510 as the salesman said "how good they are" to help me find my way to a friends wedding.
Well after turning it on, NOTHING!! just a blank screen?!
I looked at all the info, oddly Tom Tom do not include any help if the unit does not work! so no fault finding!!
Just bloody annoyed! £350 and it does not work, ended up being late for the wedding, good bye Tom Tom hello something else?
Any suggestions, this time I will listen to you guys, not the shop assistant! |

Check its got some charge in the battery.
Press the factory reset button round the back of the unit. (read the instructions to find it).
Had mine 2 months and its done this once or twice - quick push of the reset button sorts it.
You'll love it once its working. |

I find this HARD to believe!.
Did you buy the unit on the day of the wedding?
If so, "Then it wouldn't be charged up".
If you bought it a few days BEFORE the wedding, and you had done the "First initial" charge, and it didn't work, why didn't you take it back??
As for the reset button, it's shown here,

What do you find hard to believe?
The unit was infact faulty! I returned it today, after charging it up and reading all the info it would still not work, just a blank screen, even the shop could not get it to work.
Another guy I spoke to said that they have had quite a few of these units returned and that it might be a bad batch.
Anyway I will not be putting my money into Tom Tom again! |

What shop was it??
There doesn't seem to be a lot of others complaining about this type of 'fault' if there's been a 'bad batch'. _________________ Using an A to Z

The shop was Dixon, its a supastore and they have quite a lot of sat-nav's, they also have a tech guy with Tom Tom training to do minor reapir work, so they should know what they are talking about.
He said that its just the new units that have the problems, the older 300/500/700 units have been fine but the the new 510 have been a problem. |

Hi alix776.
I used to push mine down to the second click and after 2 weeks of working OK it started dropping the power supply connection and rebooting when going over bumps.
The mount design is a disaster. (This topic covered extensively in other threads & other forums)
Needless to say my money's gone elsewhere now. |

hi ceejay i do agree the mount is coming in for some serious stick for some reason i dont have one myself so cant comment on them inuse only what I'm told other and reading the forums i think from seeing the mount the idea is good but the application could have been better ie a more solid mount that would be easier to put the unit in and out of as quite a few people seam to be having problems with them. this just my personal veiw haveing only seen the new goes in action a few times close up _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. Posted: Tue May 30, 2006 8:25 pm Post subject: TT510 has problems - Windshield Mount is most serious |
|
|
The first TT510 I bought at BestBuy was DOA -- it couldn't read the flash card. I took it back and they tried the card from another unit, which worked, so it was a bad flash apparently. The unit itself works pretty well, but the windshield mount is worthless! I have been back to BB twice to try new mounts and a different unit, and they all have the same problem: the TT510 loses power and reboots, then the battery runs down and the unit goes off completely. One the unit loses power connection, I can't get it to resume without completely stopping the car, remounting the windshield mount ,and futzing with it. Then it goes out again anyway in a few minutes. TT support acknowledges the problem and promised to ship me a new, redesigned mount "as soon as they come in."
The windshield mount is the ONLY WAY you can power the unit in a car. There is no direct power input on the unit — it gets its power from the mount. Also, the mount is the only way to attach a microphone (necessary for the bluetooth speakerphone feature), external speakers, or an external antenna (needed on one of my cars, since the windshield has an rf-shielding film over it). Thus for me the unit won’t be very useable intil they fix the mount.
A second issue is the lack of documentation for the traffic feature -- they don't explain in the manual how to use the traffic icons, how to route around traffic problems, or how to display them. No matter what I do, I get "no info" when trying to display a single traffic marker, although it shows me where on the road the incident is. TT support said they don't know how to use it either, but promised to figure it out and email me revised docs.
The final issue is that Mac support for this unit is ZERO. I tried the TomTom Home application to back up my unit, and it crashes. TT support said (after a week of silence) that they know about the crash and that I must back up by doing a manual disk copy. The only other feature in TT Home that works is the "Browse" option, which you can do anyway in the Finder. The TT Traffic Alert feaure says "Not supported in your country", and TT support confirms this, but promises support in a month. And none of the functions for operating the TT itself from the computer are supported on the Mac. Thus TT Home has absolutely no function on the Mac.
Other than those blunders, the TT510 interface is good, it's voice navigation clear and understandable, and the routing useful. But the flaws make this an iffy purchase. |

For the record I have had 3 510's and 2 910's all returned because either unable to get GPS fix or mount - no power or intermittent power.
Word of WARNING - AVOID Comet ... they have a joke of a returns policy. I returned a faulty 510 a day after I bought it (power kept cutting out when on the mount - but it did have a GPS signal ... sigh) Comet insisted on 'testing' the unit and would not refund because it was Saturday and TT were closed and could not authorise a replacement or refund - what a load of crap .... so you have been warned AVOID COMET !! |

This is actually nothing to do with Comet's returns policy, but a statutory right that you have. If they told you otherwise it's because many of the staff in these places say the first thing that comes into their heads. If you know your rights and make enough noise you generally get what you are entitled to eventually. |

Agreed ... I faxed their head office a notice before action and within 2 hours (I had to return to the sjop) but had full refund and the cost of my petrol money !!!
Now, I am scared to say this - BUT I think I may finally have a 510 that WORKS !!! Story so far ... have returned 2 X 910's and 3 x 510's .... Comet DID refund the one day old TT 510 ... avoid this retailer.
Went to Tesco who now sell TT 10 series. Bought one last night. Set it up in the car park.
Unit mounted ok - green light ... unit reset itself (well documented problem on this forum) at least 7 times in ten minutes. GPS fix page was blank - black/yellow disc was static ... nothing !!!
Went back - good old Tesco had one final unit in stock exchanged for me .. so TT 510 number FIVE ... mounted ok .. phew ... green light ... phew ... drove car ... no connection problems ... phew .... GPS - spinning disc on GPS page ... indication of sats ... in about 5 minutes ... 4 bar reception ... phew ... maintained 4-5 bar - phew. Went home - updated software via HOME - for new phones etc. Switched on this morning - 2-5 secs ... 4 bar reception - yipee !!!!
Sooooo ... at the moment all the previous issues I have experienced have not been replicated in this unit .... I only hope things progress without problem now .....
So interesting things to note .... the later units have a different start up - list of languages whereas some of the other units I have had are already set to a language - usually NOT English !!!
The GPRS set up - seems to set up the phone on the current unit without the need to select phone, network provider etc.
Message to TT - God only knows what kind of Quality Control you have .... now I have a working unit .... I have not suddenly developed some stange ability to mount TT units, my car, location or anything else has canged so STOP telling me that I AM the problem .... YOUR units have problems GET ON and SORT IT OUT. I have wasted hours of my life - had untold problems with returning units and all the hassles of buying units - currently I have £700.00 off my bank account while I wait for the cost of two units to be refunded !!! |
