For the eTrex Vista, my first GPS, Garmin extended the battery range at the last firmware upgrade in 2003 to include 'Lithium' (that is, non-rechargeables) and this setting worked just fine, although I actually prefer to use NiMH rechargeables.
The original battery range on my new 60CSx was just Alkaline and NiMH (no Lithium setting), but when I upgraded the firmware to 2.71b I got a new option for 'Lithium Ion', which does not actually work with non-rechargeable Lithium batteries, so presumably means what it says. There is no such thing as a (rechargeable) Li-Ion AA battery, and cannot be because a single Li-Ion cell delivers 3.4V, so even if someone produced one in AA format, it would not be a substitute for the usual AA batteries. However, I believe there are now Li-Ion batteries the size and shape of a pair of AA batteries that will fit AA-driven devices if the battery compartment is the right shape. Anyone know if that's what the new setting is for? |

Specifically, the Li-Ion battery I am referring to is the CR-V3 used in some digital cameras |
