A new firmware update is available for the 60CSx, appears to fix a bug with the barameter altitude readings that I noted in another thread on here.
Will load it tonight. _________________ __________________________

Hi,
I have just tried to load 2.7 using the web-updater - it downloaded the file and crashed the PC whilst trying to load the loader into the GPS.
I let the PC re-boot and then waited to see if it sorted itself out - no such luck. However, I had taken the precaution of downloading the file prior to using the web loader, so I started the manual version and this worked OK. SO now I have a functioning GPS with version 2.7.
These are the changes from 2.6 to 2.7 in case anyone did not get the notification e-mail.
* Improve path nighttime color for map Topo Great Britain v2.
* Enhance layout and functionality of tide station chart information.
* Add new time zones for major cities in the U.S. and Europe.
* Improve By-Name city search to use all available maps.
* Improve layout of airport information display.
* Improve reset function of timer lap distance.
* Improve route calculation performance by setting recalculation distance farther ahead.
* Fix issue where extremely high or low altitude readings could occur when baro auto-calibration was enabled.
* Prevent Poor Satellite Reception popup from repeatedly occurring when GPS is off.
* Add GPRMB sentence to the NMEA output.
* Improve stability when using Lithium Ion Battery.
* Fix track log time stamps.
* Improve Custom POI banner display on map preview page.
* Fix issue where total ascent and total descent were incorrectly computed.

Good god! - My PC locked doing this firmware update last night, this was with the manual version, didn't do any harm luckily & worked 2nd attempt. Too much of a coincidence I think, worth an email to Garmin.
2.7 seems ok so far. _________________ __________________________

Garmin released a beta version of 2.70 as 2.71 (12th May) and
added the ability to saving active track to memory
card, which was available in V2.62 beta, but deleted in V2.7.
I did not load 2.62 and as yet have no plans to load 2.71. If anyone does load 2.71 let us know how it works out?

Same here, I can't see any need for this change so will stick to 2.7 _________________ __________________________

I was brave, or perhaps rash, enough to load 2.71 onto my new 60CSx. I am pleased to report no significant problems as yet. By the way, I assume the newly, or recently, introduced "Lithium Ion" battery option refers to rechargeables, since it certainly does not work with non-rechargeable lithiums - it appears these can be used only on the NiMh setting. Also, the USB MSD capability is a bit unnerving since you can get out of it only by switching the unit off. Am I right in assuming that the option to set temperature to F or C is there for the benefit of one of the hidden dignostic screens?
I would NEVER upgrade FIRMware on any device directly from the web. Downloading the updater to hard disk and then running it locally removes one major opportunity for something to go wrong. But, as reported above, even that is no guarantee ...! |

OK, I have answered one of my own questions: the purpose of the Centigrade/Fahrenheit selection is to allow choice over how water temperature is presented if you hook the 60CSx up to some of the other NMEA devices encountered in marine applications.
Amazing what you can work out from the manual when you read the small print. |
