|
|
I have recently upgraded from cp5 to cp6 but cannot get the new software to install on any computer ( have now tried it on 5) all running Windows XP Home. The installation starts correctly but after entering the Copilot product key I get the error message "registry editor problem" and the installation terminates. I have spoken to ALK helpdesk who have sent me a replacement set of disks, but they produce the same error. I have aslo disabled all anti virus/firewall/spyware programs and disabled all other startup programs but still it will not install on any of the 5 computers I have tried. Can anyone help! |

Make sure you haven't got any stray programs called setup.exe lurking on your computer. Sometimes the installation program will latch on to the wrong one and then get stuck.
Something which worked for me when I had installation problems with the latest upgrade - use File Explorer to look at the contents of the installation CD. Look for Setup.exe and double click on it. You may find, as I did, that it works OK from there

Assuming that XP Home isn't any different to XP Professional, does the account that you logged-in as have administrator privileges? _________________ Ian

I am not an expert in this area, but from what you say, and the fact that it fails when you try to enter the serial number (which is written to the registry) with what appears to be a registry write problem, leads me to suspect that there is still something active on your PC preventing the registry being updated.
You are obviously aware of the issues re firewalls, antivirus etc, since you are disabling them - I just wonder if there is something you are missing which is blocking CoPilot's access to the registry.
As to having failed on 5PC's, are they all your own with the same software loaded?
I would suggest that you look to see what you have loaded on each PC which could be in anyway classed as a security tool - don't forget that some utility suites will load registry protection too. |

The PC's I have tried are not all my own and the only common program on them all is Windows XP Home. |

I assume that what is failing is the initial install on to the PC, and not an automatic install from there on to the PDA. If the latter, use the desktop software to create an SD card (either over ActiveSync, or with a PC card writer), and then click on the installation cab file on the PDA to start the install there. That's what I had to do to install CP5, although I can't remember whether CP6 works the same way. _________________ Ian

Here's a long shot, after googling the 'registry editor problem' which did not produce a solid answer.
The correct Registry Editor program is:
C:\WINDOWS/regedit.exe
However some systems still have the now-obsolete but similar editor named regedt32.exe, in the same location. If the obsolete one is being invoked during installation of CP it could cause your problem. (But then the problem ought to be seen while installing other applications as well?)
You might try renaming the obsolete program temporarily, as long as you do have the correct one also. If not you can copy it from any PC that has it. I think the operating system would only invoke regedt32 if it failed to find regedit.
Of course playing with the registry can be dangerous, but the renaming above should be harmless. I am not an expert here, but I think regedit.exe is the only acceptable Registry Editor nowadays (for any system after WinNT 3.50, i.e, in the last 10 years or so). _________________ Doug
