|
|
I'm a complete newbie to both GPS and Pocket PC. I'm very pleased with the Aldi package, and I've also downloaded the POI-Warner software.
I know that some GPS systems can show your road speed, and although I know my SAAB speedo is very accurate (1% - tested on a rolling road) I would be interested to find out what Medion - Navigator thinks it is. But this doesn't seem to be a display/programme option.
Am I missing something? Or do I need to buy another piece of software? |

Crux View does, and it's free, but we need a Pocket PC guru to tell us whether it'll work with GPS receivers other than the Emtac wireless one.
I provided a link to it in my first post.

There are a few freeware GPS Info Utilities that will report speed but none will work in conjunction with your navigation software, it's one or the other I'm afraid as only one application at a time can communicate with the GPS COM Port. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Try TomToms GPS Info Application. Get it at http://www.tomtom.com/support/ce/downloads/ppcgps207.zip
You'll need to configure the Medion GPS as 'NMEA 0183v2 4800' on 'COM1'
On the Status Tab if you have configured it correctly you will see a line of dots moving from left to right between the GPS and PDA Icons. Once a lock is acquired you will have Lat/Lon and Speed Readouts, you can switch between Km/H, MPH or even Kts! on the GPS tab. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Tried that on my Aldi/Medion setup and it works perfectly. Reads about
3mph below the speedo - so I guess the speedo is reading high. Don't know what he accuracy of GPS is at about 30mph tho'?

Given a constant speed on level ground the GPS is as near accurate as you will get in a consumer device. Uneven acceleration or rapid changes in altitude will affect the accuracy.
If you drive at an indicated 30mph on the GPS then you will be as near to excatly 30mph as possible, of course using the speedo at least gives you a margin of error should you encounter our boys in blue or a safety camera one day _________________ Darren Griffin |

I have downloaded this application and it works as stated on my Medion, there is one question I would like to ask, what does the blue arrow shown top right point to? |

That is your direction of travel in relation to North with your bearing in degrees below that. So if you are heading due East the arrow would point to 3 'O' Clock and the heading would 90 degrees. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Depending the car you have, it is quite easy to recalibrate. My 15 year old BMW has got the function on the board computer to 'correct' the speedo if you fit inappropriate tyres. Might be worth checking out as it is a lot safer to use your speedo to check the speed than a PDA. |
