We have completed a multi-part review of CheckPOInt including versions 2.0.2 and version 3.2.

CheckPOInt is a third party add-on tool to allow notification of POI's (Points Of Interest) in TomTom Navigator 2 and is best used for alerting of Speed Cameras although it can be used for other types of Points Of Interest.

I tried this out yesterday on trip from Bletchley to IKEA near Wembley.

Overall, I was very impressed at the way the system performed. There's a lot of free software out there and a lot of genuinely useful stuff and CheckPOInt has the rare distinction of being both. Brilliant!

Before setting out I made the mistake of having it monitor both the downloaded POIplace POIs and the PocketGPS ones. This of course meant I was getting double warnings - particularly on the North Circular road in London, which naturally drove me crazy. It did however highlight differences in the datasets, but I suppose that's up to us users to fix.

Based on this admittedly brief test, I have to say I prefer the POIplace system. The data seems richer as it identifies the speed limit and camera type more readily. It allows you to associate a different sound file with each type, so you get a better quality of audio information meaning you can take appropriate action without having to look at the PDA screen or over react - e.g. by slowing down to 30 when it's only a 40 or 50 mph device. The downloaded sound files are great but are a few short of providing all the different types you might want; although there's nothing stopping you from adding your own. There's an added bonus too: I saw a German language set available for download. I think it would be great fun to have it say something like "ACHTUNG! Schnellerblitzenkamera!" or something now and again!

The combination of the ability to identify the camera type on-scene and the seamless syncing is nice. The whole end-to-end process is very intuitive and easy. It should mean the dataset stays accurate and improves rapidly over time. For Example, the McDonalds dataset is much better and I suspect this is because it's much easier just to press the "add poi" physical button on the PDA button as you're passing. The only thing that worries me is there are some idiots out there who are bound to mess it up. With regard to the download size issue, I speeded things up dramatically by using active sync over wireless (WiFi) This is much faster than syncing via the cradle - particularly when doing things like installing the 95MB GB map.

The one thing I don't like too much is this "angle of detection" business. It's would be nice if there was an option to have it confine its warnings to the planned GPS route and took account of the typical speed values for the route ahead. I got a 30 sec alarm yesterday when I was approaching a village at about 60 MPH. To get a ticket, I would have had to continue through the village at 60, hand-brake a hard left off my route and accelerate down the high street to about 90mph to make it within the 30 secs. Probably would have needed a VERY souped up Subaru to achieve it.

It could also do with an "Acknowledge" button so that you don't get warned about the camera on the same trip or day again. There's a forest of them near IKEA on the NCR that caused the system to go berserk with 30 and 10 sec warnings in close succession as I manoeuvred around IKEA's car park - i.e. as the 25 degree "beam" swung in their general direction. OK OK - so I shouldn't need SatNav to get around IKEA's car park. Wink

I'll turn it off next time.

I've been using 2.0.2 now for quite a while and it's been very impressive and stable with my 5450 running PPC2002. Thought I'd upgrade to the this latest version (3.2) to get the additional benefits etc but what a mistake that was! It has totally corrupted Tomtom Navigator itself, it now won't launch at all and I get contstant fatal application errors for Program: TomTom, Navigator.exe, Exception 0xc0000005, Address: 000b2c6c. I get both program groups listed, Checkpoint 2.0 and 3.2 but both are now unusable.

Hard reset needed, going back to 2.0.2. Evil or Very Mad

Can you clarify "3. Another thing must be remembered is if you do configure POIPlace, it will upload your OV2's you create!"

Not sure if it's good or bad and how you would go about setting that up?

I recently purchased a navman pin570 which runs Smart ST 2005 software and was given this link to download speedcamera software however as far as I can see there is no mention of checkpoint being compatible with this software only tom tom navigation, is this the case Question

and if it is can someone please recommend a program that is compatible.

Can anyone point me to v. 2.0.2 please? All the links seem only to point to v. 3 Also, this application is said to be suitable for Navigtor 1 & 2. Does that mean it is not suitable for Navigator 3, which is the version I have?

CheckPOInt has started crashing now I'm trying to run it with TomTom5. Thing is it's CheckPOInt v 5.02 with TomTom5.0 but that's another story

Having just re-read my first post, I would add that a section camera has warnings before reaching the poi as well, but then continues to warn after you pass the camera for a predetermined length of time.
