Manufacturers don't seem to make this task easy, but I have done it successfully with my eTrex Vista and my Toshiba e800, and I hope the details will be helpful to you.
Option 1. PDA manufacturer's serial cable terminated in a DB9F connector, generic DB9M to DB9M null modem connector, Garmin eTrex serial cable also terminated in a DB9F connector. You'll have to go to an electroncis bits-and-pieces supplier for the null modem connector (may not be as easy to find as one would hope, but you can also get them over the net), and it is essential to get null-modem not straight through.
Option 2. PDA manufacturer's cable connected to a third-party DB9M-to-eTrex cable. The latter incorporates the same connection pattern as the combination of the Garmin cable and the null modem connector. I have one a few inches long. This setup does exactly the same as option 1, but is much neater - in most situations one long piece of cable is long enough. I bought my third-party cable off the shelf, but someone with the necessary skills could easily make one using the Garmin bare-wire eTrex cable, or even an off-brand eTrex connector.
For Fugawi and Anquet you need to set the eTrex to NMEA. You can use it with Que, but you need to set it to GARMIN.
Option 3. Buy a cable set from pc-mobile. That may be even neater than option 2, but was not open to me because as far as I know they do not do the PDA-end cable for the Toshiba, but you can certainly get one for HP.
