I understand that radar detectors are illegal to use in France, is it legal to use the French POI's for the speed cameras on a Tomtom? Does anyone know of a web-site for confirmation?? |

While your question was one that strictly asked about legality of something, I confused as to why you asked a question about TomTom on a ViaMichelin forum? _________________ - - - - - - - - -

It may be illegal to use a detection device, but TomTom / ViaMichelin is no such thing. You can go to the ViaMichelin website, note down the location of cameras, and then subsequently use that information when driving. So your satnav POIs (also available from ViaMichelin) are really only replacing paper and pencil. I wonder if that’s illegal. |

Martike, you are missing the point. The original question was about using TomTom yet this is a ViaMichelin forum. _________________ - - - - - - - - -

To all the people who have commented on my original question regarding using a tomtom devise for speed camera notifications in France, i was blissfully unaware that this particular forum was specifically for ViaMichelin, please accept my humble apologies. This is my first time of posting a quiery on any website, i will sincerely endeavour to pick the correct one next time and do consider myself told. Thank-you to the people who have given me some usefull information though, it is much appreciated. |

No, I didn't miss that, but it was an interesting question and worth discussing anyway, especially as ViaMichelin does sell speed camera POIs for France. In my reply I referred to both TomTom and ViaMichelin.
Thinking it through further, it can't be illegal to have information about speed cameras, but it can be illegal to obtain that information in certain ways. A detector isn't allowed. But access to the ViaMichelin website must be OK, otherwise Michelin is also breaking the law by both having and selling this information.
Of course, we are talking about France so it's probably only a problem if you aren't French, aren't using French software, or not driving a French car. |

I believe that there is an official French Government website that tells those who wish to know where there camera sites are. Of course, like the UK, this may just be the permanent sites and not the location of mobile sites.
Indeed, I have just found the site which is at http://www.controleradar.org/en.html _________________ - - - - - - - - -
