|
|
Hi. I've got a great PDA - the O2 PDA Exec (aka i-mate Jasjar). The device has a vga (640x480) screen and runs WM5, it is bluetooth enabled. I'd like to add sat nav to it - primarily for driving directions, but don't have a real clue as to what I need.
Am I right in thinking that I need to add two things - a bluetooth gps receiver, and a software mapping package?
If so, is there anything I need to especially look out for when selecting both of these items? As with everything, I guess there is a cost/performance tradeoff
Do all receivers work with all software packages, and are all receivers and software compatible with my PDA?
I'd appreciate any help or recommendations

I would just buy this package http://www.tomtom.com/products/product.php?ID=99&Language=1
and not worry about details of cost benefit tradeoffs etc |

Tom Tom is the market leader and is generally considered by most people to be the most intuitive and eaesiest to use. You can buy the package that Mark recomends or you can buy the TT software and a different BT receiver. Not much money in it between the two. _________________ Peter

The only reason you'd need a different receiver is if you have specific requirements, e.g. a removable battery, or a permanent on switch, or you just want to make yourself look clever/a ponse by buying something different for the sake of it.
The technology in the TomTom receiver is the current best available (Srif star III) |

Those that have had a Tom Tom receiver whose battery failed relatively quickly and had to either scrap it or pay an exhorbitant cost to Tom Tom to send it back and have them replace it think that a receiver with a user replaceable battery is much better!
And you can buy some very good makes a bit cheaper and save a bit of money - but not huge amounts. _________________ Peter

Guys, thanks for your advice.

In my experience, quotes like this in relation to technology products often means that it may not be the most flexible package for advanced users. I expect that I will be an advanced user and want a package that will give me flexibility (I'm not sure what this flexibility is in relation to satnav systems yet, but I'm sure you guys do).
I'm a very experience user of pcs, bluetooth etc so I'm not worried about ease of setting up. I am willing to spend time getting the best out of such purchases.

Thinking a lot of yourself there ;). As for the advanced features, then only you will know what they are. We don't know your life and what you want to do with the product.
Perhaps you could research yourself and find out what you want the product to do and then come back and ask us again.
IMO for road navigation there is nothing to beat TomTom v5 right now. However if you are doing anything else other than driving then there may be other solutions. |

I too am not sure what you mean or want. Can only suggest you try to find a seller that has several working on display and see if they offer what you want.
TT does everything I want of it. All I know is that if I am inputting when driving I want something that is simple and intuitive to use so that I can concentrate on the road. _________________ Peter
