why have you removed the cables from the console ? it looked perfect to me from close up pic 4 is this a full time ammendment.
would also like to see the fully finished article with the mobby sited below the i3 with the added bonus of its power supply in situ, all wires connected to both items, as it were
i hope mr.g is pleased with the images to date. come on andy give us some feedback :D |

Mr G is so good with his balls! and what service
8)
Thanks very much, orderd Thurs, and package was there when I got home Fri.
The dog had chewed the package, but Mr G's balls are made of strong stuff and no damage was done (just hope that it didn't hurt)

Yep - I'm very pleased! It's nice to see what people can do with such a simple part. It's growing quite big now - not just on here but elsewhere, to the point where I suspect it can't be long before Garmin or Ram-mount start sniffing about. But until then... keep up the good work! |

Mr G made a custom adaptor to mount my i3 on my bike using a Ram mount. This gives great positiong flexibility as I use an exapnding tank bag but want to obscure the intruments as little as possible. Additionally removal as an assembly is very quick and a very in-obtrusive Ram ball is all that remains. When I eventually get a higher spec GPS I'll already have the bike mount as the Ram will take whatever I eventually choose.
In short, although it's only a part of the solution, Mr G's stainless 1 inch to 17mm adapter looks good, is durable and performs as well as anticipated. Cost about half the price of the i3 all in including the Ram bits but is rock solid and just what I was looking for.

Shameless plugging but there's now a website at http://www.mounts.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ with more pics on. Some of you may see yourselves on there!

Thanks to Mr G I have been able to make a custom Garmin i3 dash mount in my 306.
This is my first attempt at posting photos so I hope it works...
The first step was to drill and tap an M6 hole in the dash, I couldn't work out how to remove the vents but could see that there was a web just behind where I wanted to mount the i3, this was ideal as it would be stronger. I started with a 2mm drill, then 3.5 then 5mm before tapping a thread to about 15mm deep. I ground the point off of the plug tap so that the thread went right to the end of the hole:
I cut about 30mm of thread from an M6 bolt, deburred the cut end and threaded it into one of Mr G's black Delrin balls, slipped a 10mm length of black plastic pneumatic hose onto the exposed thread and screwed it into the dash:
The result is nice and firm and doesn't look out of place amongst the extra controls for the Inforad etc...
With the i3 mounted here I can still see the stereo, use the vents, access all existing switches and reach the i3 with ease (not whilst driving of course).
one challenge I had was working out how to remove the i3 from the ball, I knew I didn't want to tug on the dash as eventually something would break and I would have a pair of vents hanging from the back of my i3. I found that if I mounted the ball 10mm from the dash it would pivot up far enough for the ball to pop out of the socket without a risk of breaking anything.

andy great web site
if i may be as so bold to make one observation
pic 1 and 2 of dils "a" pillar mounting, as spectacular as they are, do not show your work hence selling yourself short.
i am not suggesting that you show my rather crude adventure but other examples showing the famous mr. g ball may be more beneficial.
all said and done "if you got it flaunt it " |

Hi all,
Good site Andy, but as Matb said, the photos of my A post mount are not really suitable as I used the original garmin suction mount so do not show the expertise in your balls. You are quite welcome to use the console shots if they are any good for you and I should have a couple more in the next day or so and seeing as its you I will waive the copyright on them .
Have you noticed how nice and quiet it`s been on here all week and then all of a sudden....Mat`s back and stirring thing`s already!!!!!

Hi all,
Here`s another couple of pics after a few modifications to the console. I have moved Mr G`s ball up a bit , put the cables back where they were and added a mobile phone holder.
First pick : set up
[im g]
Second pick : all wired up with phone and i3 in situ
[/im g]
Thanks for looking.....regards...Dil |

Right mat, do you know I have been to the dentist with less pain than you give me!!
I can wire the moby up to the power if required via double adaptor.
It is capapble to be used with one of those "Borg" things stuck on the side of your head , but no one calls me often enough for me to use one.
It can also be connected to a hands free connection/ earpiece but I dont use them either for the same reason as above.
When it has rung it didnt seem to make any difference to gladys (i3)
Is there anything else now, before I go to work. Have a look on my website in my profile, that will keep you quiet for five mins.
By the way, I`ve got a sticky now aswell, it`s bl**dy roasting down here!!
Regards...Dil
I have a feeling he`s going to ask now what a "Borg" is. |
