|
|
I bought a Garmin i3 last week. I have installed v2.7 software and the camera database using Ash10's software. I was having a few problems with jerky maps in 3D mode and long hold ups until the map "caught up". I have turned on the WAAS/EGNOS mode but this did not help.
I have tried Track upwards mode and this problem goes away. However, I tried the 3D mode again today and the jerkiness is 10x worse. Sometimes the map is freezes for about half a minute before catching up.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so, how have you got rid of it?
Also, does anyone know where you can get a users guide? My i3 was new but came with hardly any instructions. I have no idea how many of the features work and would like to understand the detour feature.
Thanks

Craig, What type of vehicle do you use the device in? is it fitted with the coated relective surface (athermic glass) - if so the unit might be strugling to attain and then maintain lock to the satalite signal. - Mike |

Sorry..should have mentioned, I do have a reflective screen but have an external aerial.
The satellite reception is good (5 bars) and the voice commands spot on. Its just the graphics that are jerky.

You can download the owners' Manual here:

Can't help with the jerky maps, I'm afraid. Mine are fine. _________________ Anita

Only one other thought - have you been messing with the voice files in anyway? - i.e. changing them to a custom home cooked voice? - probably not, but its a thought, there is little else to go wrong with the stock unit when left alone - Mike |

Have you tried a reset? Hold down the left-hand button and the wheel, then the 'On' button.
It will clear your favourites, so back them up first using EasyGPS, available to download free from http://www.easygps.com/ if you don't already have it. _________________ Anita

Still jerky and some big delays until it catches up in 3D mode. Could it be that the size of the GPX files are slowing it down? Would it perhaps improve things if the database was in its "raw" format as CSV files? |

Maybe it's a faulty unit. I'd take it back to where you bought it and get them to exchange it for another one.
I would try it straight from the box, and only upload one thing at a time, trying it out in between so, if it happens with the new unit, you can see at what stage the jerking occurs, and therefore what's causing the problem.
Is it jerky in simulation mode? If so, it would save you going for a drive between updates _________________ Anita

I have also jerky maps in 3D mode and have always thought it was just normal for a budget SatNav , so today I swapped to Track up mode and went out on a little run. What a difference everything was smooth and even the scrolling maps are much clearer, all Jct and turns were spot on. I will run with this in future and see if it is not just novelty where I see an improvement.

I have an M4 and I was having same probs with routing jerking and jumping to catch up.
After a bit of experimenting I found it was caused by the custom poi I'd put on, I took a load off and just had speed camera and Aire de Services on, oh and Fish n Chips :D and it worked a lot better.
Also you can stop it jerking in 3D mode by zooming out from full zoom 2 clicks.
It might be caused because at the 2 highest zoom settings (in 3D) the icons will be on the map and slowing it down. |
