Hi all in the forum.
Can a Gatso camera snap you from the opposite direction? I was some 400 yds from a camera on my side of the road so the camera was in front of me, as i approached it knowing it was there i saw it flash before i reached it and it was a straight piece of road at night and no cars in front of me for as far as the eye could see on my side. Just after the camera flashed a car approached on the opposite side of the road coming towards me. Could that Gatso have flashed an oncoming car on the opposite side of the road?
thanks for answers in advance

First off - Are you it was a Gasto and not a Truvello?
Gatso Tend to snap from the rear-end
Truvello Tend to snap from the front-end.
So with a Truvello you get a piccie of the driver.
They are not too dissimilar in looks.

JD | But do they "Flash" - if they did it would ruin the night vision of the driver, and be a serious safety hazzard, they probably work using infra red illuminators, but without night vision goggles on you will not see this, and its illegal to drive with such a contraption fitted to your head, its OK to fly a fast jet at low level in the dark though using them.
I would say it was a GATSO if it flashed, triggered by reflections they do get confused at times - Mike |

Not far from me there is a stretch of 40 mph duel-carriageway (2 lanes each side). Recently I was overtaken by a car, which must have been doing 50 plus and the Gatso, which is on the other side of the road, flashed.
Had anyone been driving in the opposite direction, at 40mph or less, would have got a shock. :P
Along the same stretch there is another sited in the centre, which can, and often is, switched from one direction to the other. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Even more so than the Gatso I mentioned on the other side of the road, that was bad enough.

Yes Mike, but I imagine the last thing on the drivers mind would be the marker lines. I think, if he/she was at or under the limit and saw the flash, they'd be thinking 'Who, how, what, I'm not.................'. :P And then worry thinking they may be getting a ticket. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

In Northamptonshire they are now trialing Truvelo's that take a picture from the front and the back. Supposedly for Motorbikes. _________________ Richard

Thanks for all the replies. This was definitely a Gatso and it flashed like a flash camera twice as i approached it. so recon it was a Gats which flashed on a reflection. Interesting replies, thanks

Not sure on that one. It's mainly to stop the abuse of the system where the driver won't identify the driver and can add points onto someone else's license (wife, son etc) by claiming it wasn't them driving. If the image shows a 45 year old middle management type then it's difficult for him to argue his wife might have been driving. The photos are quite clear.
On a motorbike the rider will be wearing a helmet which makes it very difficult to identify the rider, esp in winter when you might also be wearing a thin balaclava underneath.
Also most motorcycles don't have a front license plate so that means the rider AND vehicle would have to be identified solely on the part of the face you can see (part of the nose and eyes) which isn't nearly as easy as having the license plate in shot. |

Sorry missed the bit about front AND back. How does that work? How can they be sure they get the same vehicle? |

Gatso's can definately be triggered by a vehicle going the other way.
Many, many years ago some friends and I discovered a camera that we could set off by driving past it with our wheels on the white line in the middle of the road.
Obviously I've grown up a bit in the intervening ten years, but it was a stupid camera (placed in the dip between two hills where you are likely to be going a bit over the limit on the way down in order to maintain speed going up the steep slope again) and it was nice to know we were wasting the film. 8) They've since made that bit of road even more stupid by changing the speed limit between 20mph and 30mph about 4 times in the space of a couple of hundred yards. |

Is that the A237 woodcote grove road? Crazy strip of road if it is. The school kids have been known to turn the signs round on the lampposts through there |
