First post so please be gentle Wink , we are looking to buy the Mio A201 with tomtom5 gb with major european roads (is it worth it over just gb) and been hunting sites and ebay and have found a few deals with various prices and whats sticking out through reading on here is that there is or was problems installing/using tomtom on this pda. One seller is noting that his units have the new bluetooth fix and also the id fix, will this be any differant to the sellers selling the package with the tomtom? or is it worth buying from this seller? as one seller has replied stating the problem was with earlier A201s and that they install it anyway so there should be no problems Confused

What do you reckon? Its a major purchase for us and we want to get it right rather than 6 months down the line and find we done it wrong, we also considered buying the unit and then buying the software but for a little extra we can get the full package and these are from dedicated gps sellers on ebay. Any advice on this would be most welcome.

Evidently TTN5 could be made to work on a Mio A201 but if you added anything to it, e.g. another map, the product code kept changing.

TomTom stated the Mio A201 was not compatible with TTN5 software and globalpositioningsystems stopped bundling the software with it for a time. It appears they have now solved the problem.

Many people have had problems purchasing from e-bay.

TTN6 is due out fairly soon so it may be worth hanging on a while to see the price and if TTN5 becomes cheaper because of it.

Have a look at the globalpositioningsystems site.

It is worth getting the full European mapping if you intend using it in GB and two other countries.

Thanks for the replies, any ideas when TTN6 is out as ideally we would like to buy before june as were off to spain and would like it for then, does the gb with major european roads is that just the motorways or will it go into a bit more detail? Should i go opt for the seller who mentions that the unit is patched? I would actually like to see the unit but the nearest we can find is edinburgh which is a bit of a journey not to mention adding the petrol (glasgow)

Sorry for all the questions but im looking to splash out £330 ish at the moment and want to get it right.

My experience has been driving in France, you could get away with GB and the Major Roads of Europe. I was surprised at just how many roads were covered.

GPSforless have the A201 and TTN5 for £319.99.

There are different ones.

TTN5 Software with GB and Major Roads of Europe.

TTN5 Software and European maps (including GB). This software has both Maps and Plus maps. The plus maps have major roads of Europe on each one. You only really need to install one of the plus maps to get major roads of europe.

Maps of Western Europe (including GB), which does not include the TT software. It's what you would add if you already had the Software and GB mapping.

TTN5 Software with GB and Major Roads of Europe is the one i cant find or is that just the basic tomtom5 which has that included but not indicated?

This is one area we wernt sure of on ebay as some had prices for gb only, gb and major european and for the unit alone, but we want the unit plus software as that will take the hassle of installing it away.

I just had a thought. Have a look at the Mio168 with Full European Software, including GB on the globalpositioningsystems site £314.95. It comes with a 256MB card which will hold, for example, GB, and France Plus maps. And the Full Postcodes and Safety Cameras.

From the same site you can get a 512MB SD Card for £14.95 and keep within your budget.

The A201 has bluetooth, and Serf III which gets faster lock-ons, where the 168 has no blutooth and is Serf II.

If you do decide to go for the 168, I must add there have been a few problems with the bottom connector breaking, my friends broke but it was repaired under the two year warranty without any fuss, I haven't had that problem and neither has my son, it pays to be gentle.

We did think of the 168 but it seemed a lot of money for an older less specd device and found the A201 while searching, the budget has went from £180 to £200 to £300 and now im thinking its sitting at £330 ish Rolling Eyes depending of which software bundle we go for Confused

I can see your point, although the 168 at £179.95 compared to £234.95 for the A201, is £55 difference for basically having bluetooth and Serf III.

Must it be a PDA?

If not look at the following for £329.95. There will be a new model, the 710, out soon, RRP £399.99. But £369.99 pre order from Maplins.

I think it must be pda, other half wants the calander and notes facility for hopefully going to the usa in the next few years and we want to use it outwith the car so it does kind of limit whats available. Also my phone has bluetooth as hubbys will be bluetooth so the a201 seems perfect. Youve got to pay for what you want havent you Wink

There is one possible other device you could consider, the PPC based phone, on contract you can get a good device with most service providers for very little cost, Ok you will still need "TomTom Navigator - Software and maps of Western Europe" plus a GPS unit, holder and power lead (some devices are supplied with the car power leads not all though).

When is your existing contract due for upgrade etc? - The big plus point of this set-up is that you are far less likely to leave te device in the car, attracting the low lifes the steal sat nav equipment, because its your phone you take it with you. - Mike
