My family and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Brittany where I used my Ipaq 3950 with a wired GPS and TT3 for all our car journeys. Thought you all might like to hear how thing got along.

Just before we left I had bought the maps of Europe, about a day after I got them I started to read on this forum that people had been having major problems with the French maps. What have I let my self in for I thought. Well, got off the boat at St Malo turned the Ipaq and within 2 minutes I had an 8 satelite lock (Not bad I thought) set my destination for the favorites list and off we went. 2 hours latwer we arrived at exactly where I wanted to be except I had set the destination at the wrong junction. My fault not TT3.

Over the next two week my family and I drove about 1000 miles around Brittany without a single hitch. Sometimes even getting a lock on 10 satelites. On 2 occasion I did loss the signal but after about a minute or so it came back.

Got back to England changed the maps and drove home.

I can only say that I was very pleased by the way TT3 perfomed, even my wife who is not a GPS covert was impressed. My children call TT3 daisy.

In the past I have had screen freezing, but when I look it was bacuase the lighter lead had com slighty loose. Before I went I did clear the Ipaq of everthing except TT3.

Sorry I cant report that our trip was a disaster, but TT3 did what it said it would do.

I was in France last month and used the Major roads of Europe, which come bundled with the UK maps (didn't bother to buy the full European maps for TomTom as I have a pan-Europe licence for CoPilot. I was agreeably surprised how many fairly minor D roads in France were included in the major roads of Europe bundle. One of my favourite bypass routes around Paris on D roads was fully covered, as were many fairly minor roads near my destination in Provence.
Some of the instructions when slipping on and off motorways or at major road intersections were just wrong however. Clear instructions to turn left when the signposts were saying just the opposite, for example. I followed the signposts, and never got lost!

I too have just returned from France and can report that TomTom works there as well as anywhere. There is just the occasional problem - about as often as in the UK - when the mapping data is clearly flawed (roundabouts in not quite the right place a particular problem) but otherwise most satisfactory.

I expect in common with me, most days when you are in France actually travelling you require a super/hypermarket, with motor fuel available?

There is already a POI database of Carrefour outlets, but that is like having Tesco without Sainsbury's or Somerfield. I started to collect the co-rdinates of the Geant and Auchan I passed, but there are only a few as I was only in Savoie/Burgundy and the Calais run thereto.

What about travellers next year collecting the co-ordinates of the hypermarkets they visit and someone (I'd be willing) compiling them all into a POI database for each chain? Any offers?

I have just found that Auchan have already done the store site listing job for us - and its all packaged in TomTom POI format, downloadable from their website www.Auchan.Fr

Let us hope that the others catch on during the next year!

Back from a holiday in France and the Auchan database works very well, It took a while to convince my wife that downloading the database was worthwhile, but she is now converted and even commented that I hadn't entered in a destination after we got off the ferry in Dover on the way home.

She wants one now!!!!!
