I'm really impressed with mine, if I have switched it on once during the day, then it gets a fix within seconds next time I switch it on, even hours later. I now only power it via the cigarette lighter socket when I want it on. I have be running mine for two weeks or so now & covered over 1000 miles. I'm sure that it is more sensitive than the previous one- much better reception. _________________ Skoda Columbus and for emergencies: TomTom + iPhone 4 & TomTom car kit |

Julie & Holux have definitely come up trumps for us. The unit is amazing all the time, even more sensitive than before. _________________ Skoda Columbus and for emergencies: TomTom + iPhone 4 & TomTom car kit |

Hi,
I've just received my GR-213 and noticed that it has firmware 213-53800337, which is less than the 54900001 mentioned in the post from JM-HoluxUK. Should I be worried?
Furthermore, I live in Romania and there's no chance to get the unit replaced or flashed here Is there any way I can flash the unit myself? I've read some posts on another forum and it seems I need SirfFlash and the right firmware file; that's it?
Thanks,
S. |

Hi Soepy
When I got my replacement GR-213 directly from Julie (JM-HoluxUK) a few weeks ago, she put in a note to say that the Serial Numbers ( the number you quoted is not firmware) for the upgraded receivers are lower than the problem units. Apparently Holux TW had a problem with their numbering.
Sorry I don't have the actual numbers which she quoted, but you can always contact Holux UK to confirm.
Bottom line, if the unit is the old type and is deffective, a firmware flash will not fix the problem. The new units have revised hardware.
After a wek to 10 days you wil know whether or not you have the revised receiver. They really are very good.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I shouldn't assume for the moment that the unit is broken. I'm still waiting for the car to go with the GPS

I have only had a chance to briefly try-out and it seems fine. However, all was initially fine for the two previous units as well. I fully intend to leave the cig power adapter permanently connected as I assume that the new hardware will now cope with the power fluctuations caused on engine cranking. The proof of the pudding....etc.
All being well, this thread should soon be redundant

John,
I haven't followed this forum for a while so I missed the information about the HW update. That's really interesting. I just spoke to my dealer, who previously refused to repay me my money. Now, for some reason, it wasn't a problem and I would get my money back. I wonder if Holux have gone out to all dealer and confirmed the previous problem...
So, the question is if I should go buy one of the "new" GR-213 and hope that it actually works or rather go for another receiver. Is your latest replacement receiver still working fine when you leave it permanently in the cig socket?
If I buy a new GR-213, do you know what serial number I need to get to know it's got the new HW?
Regards,
Ulf
PS: Really good information sharing in this thread! |

I just realised that this information hade already been mentioned in the thread. So, I should be looking for a unit with a s/n higher than 213-54900001.
Rgds,
Ulf
PS: I'm still keen on knowing if this new hardware is still working flawlessly |

Hi Ulf,
I hope that John or Mike will come back with some "user" feedback for you, but from my point off view it looks like the new hardware has done the trick.

Julie |

Hi Ulf
I'm delighted to confirm that my replacement unit continues to work very well.
Yes it is left permanently connected to the cig socket, and usualy provides a fix in under one minute. As previously mentioned I use TTN5 and only launch this once I have a fix.
BE CAREFUL about serial numbers as I believe that the 'new batch' (at least the unit supplied to me) had lower numbers than the problem units. Julie can supply accurate information. Apparently there was a problem at the TW factory in assigning S/N's.

Julie,
Can you give any comments to John's remarks regarding serial numbers?
Could you also please tell me if a receiver with s/n above 213-60401280 is safe to buy, with regards to the HW upgrade?
Another question: Are the latest GR-213 receivers using the 1st or 2nd generation of Sirf III ?
Best regards,

Hi Ulf,
Anything with a serial number over 213-54500001 purchased from a Holux UK retailer will have the latest firmware in.
I've had a batch from TW starting 60401*** with the last 3 digits higher & lower than that stated which definately have the hardware upgrade so you should be safe with this device.
Regards,
Julie |

More feedback....I have been using this for nearly 4 months now.
What can be said? it now has a very fast TTFF every single time - less than a minute, and if it has been left for a short while - 1-2 hours it is even faster, just a few seconds. I have mine now permanently fixed in the car, with the receiver on the dashboard out of general sight, and it is only powered up when the ignition is switched on. What more could I ask for?
Now I just need a GR236 for when I'm on the bicycle or walking, as my Tom Tom Mk1 BT receiver can't cope when used for walking! _________________ Skoda Columbus and for emergencies: TomTom + iPhone 4 & TomTom car kit |
