I totally agree - more effort should have been made to make this feature available across the range.....

I think it was the size of the Speech File System that meant they couldn't get it on a standard SD Card.

Hi Oldboy,

Yes an SD card wouldn't fit the speech files (4Gb?) - the current GO 700 has a hard drive why has the 710 gone to SD?

Suppose I just cant see the logic in not providing such an important feature on at least two devices across the range......

IMHO the 710 would have been a much more attractive proposition with a HDD and the Speech files.

So true.....

Until you can get your hands one one you should check this out in the mean time. It has more details about the text to speech option and some samples that while they aren't from a 910 should be fairly close. http://www.mytomtomgo.com/vervolg.php?id=128

Quote:
You have to imagine that the voices of the 910 will sound even more realistic than these examples. This is because the GO 910 also uses Loquendo's 'Automotive Solution'. Part of that solution is a set of texts which are optimized for navigation. Think samples like "in 100 meters...", "on the roundabout..." and "go left..." here. By means of 'ordinary' text-to-speech it's possible to add very specific information to the instructions like eg.:

"After 100 meters, turn left into Church street"
"Keep left, heading direction S102/S103"

1. I downloaded the 24Mb demo video (Broadband 2Ghz took just over a minute) sadly the film played but without sound in Realplayer. I tried downloading several times and different Player (Win Media Player) but still no sound.
2. On the comparison chart, the 700 (which I have currently) has Automatic Satellite Navigation (ASN), but the new ones don't.

Just listened to the voices - very impressive!

So are we going to have celebrity voices using the same software?

Having said that. you'd never get to your destination if George Bush was giving you directions. Would you believe him?

Also noticed the text to speech stuff will not have the 'emotions' software added because it's not needed for travel directions.

Surely, one of the press points is that the 910 will be able to 'speak' e-books, sms etc. Wouldn't these benefit from emotions?

Have Tom Tom stopped going just that last little bit?

Perhaps it depends on what you mean by emotions. The voice will be able to use expressive queues when performaing text to speech. Paralinguistic events as Loquendo calls them would have to be formatted for the Loquendo voice in order for it to laugh, cry, cough etc. and while the TomTom probably could do it, you just won't find text formatted that way.

Quote:
A new feature allowing you to enliven your voice prompts with "expressive cues".

A number of greetings, exclamations and interjections are pronounced with a lively intonation if you mark them with a "!". Paralinguistic events can also be produced by means of special tags (\_throat, \_cough, \_mmm, \_smack, \_laugh...).

This is from the Loquendo/Tomtom press release.

Quote:
"It is exciting to think that drivers right across the globe will be pleasantly and safely driven to their destinations by our synthetic voices" says Paolo Coppo, VP of Business Development. "We expect drivers to greatly appreciate the advantages of having more detailed voice prompts, including street names and POIs, as well as the reading of SMS messages, by the voice of their choice during their journey. The 'expressive' features of our technology can create the illusion of being escorted by a digital travelling companion."

Yeah, I know, I am whining for no reason - at the end of the day, it's just a fancy street map.

Looking forward to mine!

It plays in Quicktime without any problems... so try playing it in that ;)

Thanks Noonster. Trouble is, I haven't got Quicktime - I used to, but uninstalled it when I found I had half a dozen various freemedia players. Maybe that was a poor decision?
Happily, the demo posted by MELennium has both Quicktime and Win Media Player versions, so I have now heard it.
