Hi - I have TomTom Navigator 5 on ipaq1940 with old TomTom (silver) bluetooth receiver. It mostly works OK but at times getting a fix on satellites is slow and fiddly (PDA needs reboot sometimes or just have to wait for quite a while). The receiver also has to located at the front of the windscreen as it is sensitive to positioning. Lastly, the battery in the receiver is only good for 2-3 hours before needing a charge again. My question is whether its worth getting the newer TomTom MkII receiver (with SirfIII)? Does this make a differerence to start up time, location or battery?

Thanks - but what DIFFERENCE would I expect to see between the mkI and mkII (SIRFIII) receivers in terms of speed of satellite lock, ability to locate in different parts of the car (rather than pressed up to the windscreen) and battery life? (ie is it worth the upgrade? - the old one still works remember, but can be fiddly).

I've just changed from the old MK1 TomTom to the Holux 236. The difference is very noticeable. With receiver on the dash (even behind the heated front screen) I pick up 10 to 12 sats. The time to fix even on a cold start has been no more than about 1 min. It has even worked fine put in in the arm rest!!

I have a 12V outlet in my boot, so I keep the HoluxGPSlim 236 permanently on in the boot. It always picks up an excellent signal from there, and of course, has a fix as soon as I get in the car

having had both mk1 and mk2 receivers there is a massive difference the old one had to go in the roof in my truck the mk2 can go in a cupboard and still get 8-10 sats
