I disagree. Although it is only £2 per month, the possibility of getting a free subscription motivates users to report errors on the database. I certainly know it does me, if it remained free I would probably take the view that I can't be bothered to record and submit errors - let others do it. I think it's a very wise move. |
Thank you for your support on this Tony, and, of course, all others. You are exactly right and, as a result, the database is improving on a daily basis.
The members are showing a renewed determination to not only keep it the best but make is as near to 100% accurate as possible.
We even have members who have contacted us to tell us that they intend covering whole counties on their weekends/free time checking all known cameras (and for new ones of course).
And as for the long distance lorry drivers and taxi drivers, keep it up guys!
We are totally blown away by this level of support and will do everything in our power to justify your confidence in us. Thank you. |

Its not. As long as you have the original media then you are allowed to make copies for your own personal use. You are not allowed to make copies and sell them.

You're probably right, consider me admonished! |
Actually, I think you might both be right...and also possibly wrong.
In the US, the 'fair use' rule has in the past been interpreted as allowing you to make your own copies for personal use & convenience. However, this is currently coming under challenge by the RIAA...see here:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?home&NewsID=13879
I assume similar issues will apply in the UK.
(apologies for swerving way off-topic...now back to the regular programming...) |

I've just returned to this site specifically to download your free speed camera database (as it was last time I was here) for my TomTom. To be honest, I was a bit surprised to find that it was no-longer free - so I looked on your forums and found this thread.
I've enjoyed the ranting - it's been fun... and I've decided I'm willing to pay your £2 for a download. They may not be free any more, but they're vastly cheaper than the outrageous 70 Euros pa that TomTom are asking! If they turn out to be accurate, I expect I'll be subscribing!
On a serious note (and perhaps it's cheeky to ask this here - but given the contents of this thread I doubt anyone will mind!), does anyone have any feeling for the relative accuracies of the Pocket GPS World database and the TomTom database?
Thanks,
David |

As far as I am aware, the database here beats the tomtom one hands down and in all honesty, we have more and more people every day contributing to the database. This is now especially easy with the free POICapture program that is also availabe here. _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

That's great to know - thanks. I'm certainly impressed by the additional details on camera type available from the Pocket GPS World database. (I installed it, and POICapture, today.)
It's also good to see that POICapture has been updated to work with the latest Tomtom firmware. I was unable to use it before. :-) |

Absolutely, we have Lutz to thank for that one I believe
Don't forget to send in any alterations via POICapture as this is what makes the database so accurate. (plus there is the added advantage of getting free subscriptions if you find new locations) _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

Just for the record, its not just the "alterations" and new camera positions, please use the POICapture to record the locations of ALL speed cameras, this will ensure a better degree of accuracy, thanks - Mike |

Sorry about that Mike
Just out of interest, when I record a camera that is already there, but on the opposite side of the road that I am travelling at, do I record it as This Side or Other Side _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

Since we're on the subject of POICapture, here are two questions of my own. (If there's documentation somewhere that I've missed, I apologise!)
1. When does POICapture take the position - when the "Add" button is first pressed, or when the camera is actually stored at the end?
2. What's the timer function for?
Thanks,
David |

I believe that the location is taken when you first press the button.
The timer function is for the amount of time it takes to put in default settings on this location.
I'm sure that I will be corrected if I am wrong. _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

The first press of the POICapture Icon is correct.
The Timer is a Timeout Function which, if it is Selected, will just Capture a Default Camera if no details are Input within 5 secs. No details will then be recorded as to Type, Speed, etc. _________________ Richard

I have seen the new Pay camera database, and it is still as bad as when it was free.
Lots of cameras that do not exist, and cameras in the wrong place.
I thought the idea of paying was to get a 'professional driver' to check out all the cameras in the database and delete or modify the DB as required. |

How did you get a copy if you are not a member?
As a non-member you are possibly road-testing an illegal, out-of-date, doctored copy.
Please send me your copy and I will check it out.
It, of course, is obvious that by the ever changing nature the medium, the database will always have discrepancies. That is why hundreds of people a month send us updates - additions, removals and changes. Have you reported the anomalies that you found?
I'm very happy to confirm that PocketGPSWorld.com Members copies are widely regarded by the community and members of the industry as the best available and we are constantly reassured that the quality continues to grow. |
