Chech this site out and you will love it:
http://www.poi2go.com
This is some info provided by the guys behind POI2GO:
Poi2Go.com is targeted to provide GPS navigation software users Dynamic, Newest, Convenient, Flexible, and Personalized POI by searching available online resources (currently Yahoo Local and Google Local). Currently we only have U.S data
Several useful scenarios:
You found that POI of most of GPS navigation software is incomplete or obsolete.
You want to add new or personalized POI at your local area into your GPS software, such as "free wifi", "grocery stores"... anything you want.
You are traveling to a new city and want to find out all good restaurants around, but the default POI of your GPS software is limited. So, you find a WIFI-spot, connecting your PDA to the internet, search and download wanted POI "on the fly" and use them with your GPS software directly. Isn't that cool?
Several features:
Totally free
You can search using any query term at any U.S location.
The site is designed to work with PDA directly, so you can get the POI easily when you on the road (as long as you have an internet connection.
The results not only include Name and Location, but also include Phone Number, and "people's ratings of the local restaurants". You can view the information directly in your GPS Navigator. |

nicely done (even though they have a small mistake in the phone number format). Wonder how long it will take Google to shoot that down. _________________ Lutz

There is now a beta software version that will search for POIs in the US, Canada and the UK. Check this link for instructions on how to obtain a copy:
http://www.poi2go.com:8080/jforum3/posts/list/23.page
The program is in java with a .jar file extension. When I downloaded it, my computer changed it to a .zip extension. But by renaming it back to .jar, everything worked fine.
I think the author would appreciate some testing and feedback on this most useful tool. |

I was actually wrong with my Google assumption. The author is using Yahoo! Local . Let's hope the T&Cs of the API usage cover this solution - it is really useful.
Code: |
