Well in order to put this apparent inconsistent routing to bed once and for all i rang Garmin UK and got this response:-
The I3 software is set up to offer consistent routing at all times, are the units running the latest 2.7 firmware?
The unit is not capable of recognising times of day to offer alternative routing for traffic congestion avoidance
As long as the unit settings havent been changed (shortest/quickest) between each regular route then there is no reason for the unit to become inconsistent and offer a variance on routing.
I asked the guy if he would deem those units that offer vaying results as faulty to which he replied no, but did suggest they get the latest firmware.
So... there we have it, nowt to do with algorythms, logic gates, garden gates or even little pixies, upgrade your softwares and that should put it ok, or just dont use it for a route you know! _________________ **********************************

Anyway, shouldn't you be using SmartNav !?

Nope
Smartnav = pay for routes!
i3 = free routes
like many others, i like free!
Do we all agree? _________________ **********************************

I have been running the latest software on the i3 since before Christmas and so this cannot have been a factor in the inconsistency encountered.
Believe me all other options were the same as well.
Therefore if Garmin are to be believed (and it's not unknown for individual representatives to give wrong information) then the unit has to be malfunctioning in some way.

I think Garmin are wrong, their GPS units DO give different routes for seemingly random reasons.
For example, if I am parked on my drive and request a route to my workplace (marked with a waypoint which hasn't changed in years) then I may get one of several different "Quickest" routes.
I live on a residential road and it may tell me to turn left or turn right out of my drive at random and either direction is a reasonable route to take. I think the route you get depends on a number of factors.
One of them may be which way it guesses you might be facing. You don't want the sat nav's first direction to be "do a u-turn" when you could drive 50 yards up the road and make a couple of turns to get onto the main road. Of course this may tip the balance between any one of 3 or 4 possible Quickest routes.
Also, the Quest seems to "learn" your average speed on different types of road. Depending on your last trip, it may decide to route you a slightly different way depending on your average speeds on different road types.
However, all the routes it chooses are pretty good and there is very little to choose between them which is why chaos theory causes it chooses different routes from time to time. _________________ Gone fishing!

Um, can't speak for anybody else, but I've been on 2.70 for months.

Dead funny... more than one person has explained, and given valid reasons for why they may well use their i3 to navigate along reasonable distanced routes that they may know the GENERAL route for. And STILL you persist with the puerile, bating derision.
So numerous people have reported routing inconsistencies. And according to this response from Garmin, that's not down to any "intelligence" in routing, and SHOULD be consistent. Assuming you are using 2.70 - which I am - and I suspect many / most are - what then? Bury your head in the sand, so that you don't see any results you don't want to see? Or apologise for the budget nature of the i3 and suggest you can't have everything for the budget price tag - even reliable, core functionality.
I have been running the latest software on the i3 since before Christmas and so this cannot have been a factor in the inconsistency encountered.
Believe me all other options were the same as well.
I suspected as much.

An intelligent point, if nothing else, the v7 / v8 debate has shown some quite considerable differences in the statements by individual representatives of Garmin.
I'm more inclined to think it's a software bug / issue, than a hardware / positioning thing - because if the location / positioning was all off, you'd see it from the plotted map / and or start position, and it doesn't tend to start calculating a route until it's got a good lock.

LESTER!!!
Listen, i said that final part in jest, a joke, light hearted humour, why? well simple, we should all have a little laugh now and again, for those who dont they should try it, for those that do - they should do it some more!
Drop the arrogant nature and quite simply if you have an issue with me then very very simply keep out of threads/topics that have been started by ride4smilesjonny (thats me by the way) - notice the name? smiles!
TRY IT!!!!!
Apologies to MODS but this guy simply dosent give up! _________________ **********************************

Er, sorry rides4smilesjonny but it seems a bit rich to suggest that Lester, feeling as he seems to, ought not to post to this thread as it was started by you when in fact this topic was started by Lester and for some reason known only to you you chose to start this new thread but with the same topic.
Now to get back on topic I have used a Garmin external aerial since before Christmas so I don't think this is a factor either.

I've no problem with jokes or laughing. But by and large, you've consistently questioned the behaviour of people using their i3 to navigate, when you personally don't see the point - and failed to acknowledge or recognise any of the explanations.
After a little bit, it gets rather tedious, that people can - as a distraction - question the user behaviour, rather then miss the point completely, and accept - just accept - that there may be some reason for concern here.

Who's being arrogant by suggesting I should keep out of threads?
I'll feel as empowered to contribute to any threads I see fit - just as in the same way as I expect you will.

The same telling, schoolboy accusation - "Miss, Miss - it was HIM, not me!".
Perhaps - and this is just a suggestion, make of it what you will - given that numerous people have contributed, pointing out that they have experienced inconsistent route behaviour with their i3s - maybe it would be more productive to not challenge their usage or behaviour - because as you've seen, all that does is antagonise.
If it doesn't interest you, then why comment. If it does interest you, why continually insinuate that people are using their sat navs for the wrong purpose.
As to pleading to the mods, perhaps sticking to the topic would be better, than protestations and behavioural commentary.

As you say, quite rightly there may be some reason for concern, I'm fortunate that my unit hasnt given me these concerns that yourself and others are experiencing, but being the person I am I still like to learn as who knows my unit may play up in the future.
this is why i took it upon myself to call Garmin and enquire as to whether this was acceptable of the units or was it soft/hardware error.
Anyways, moving on Lester lets not go down the path of 'telling tales out of school' -
I hope my constructive contribution has helped in some way, did you ever get to try running both units side by side? _________________ **********************************

i started this new thread as this topic appears in a couple now, and rather than post a reply over two other threads, it appeared more logical to make it more visibly clear for all in the forum mate thats all.
And i appreciate that Lester may have kicked off the topic originally, but I thought i would try and contribute constructively.
I have used the unit to navigate to known dests, and fortunately like i said havent experienced problems like others have. Why have i used it for known dests? - Simple, i may learn something from it, deep down i feel its upto the user how they use it, and sure for a budget model you would expect consistency, but all comments put aside the unit does get us to our destination, hook or by crook! _________________ **********************************
