|
|
I was using my i3 the other day and it went a bit strange. Firstly it had me in a completely different area of the UK but still had sattelite lock as position cursor was moving in synch with car. Then after a couple of mins an information box came up on screen stating 'New maps available now' then it recalculated itself and unit went back to normal.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this? |

Not had this happen to me.
Another question, does upgrading the firmware to 2.70 upgrade the maps? |

No. They are completely separate things.
The firmware can be user updated using the WebUpdater app downloaded from the Garmin site.
The Navteq maps will (we are told) be updatable to v8 via (presumably) a CD from Garmin for v7 mapping owners in 'early 2006'???
I only mentioned the firmware, as my i3 came originally (from Somerfield) with v2.50 firmware - and this did exhibit some screwy mapping out of the box - with 'ghost' waypoints appearing, and sudden large deviations to position - with the described constant route recalculation also.
Updated to v2.70 - and nothing weird seen since - running v8 maps too, btw.

Yep, it's running on v2.7. God know's why that message came up. And besides how would the unit know if there were new maps available when it only receives a GPS signal? Unless it's been pre programmed to show message on or after a certain date, but if that was the case i'm sure there'd be many other units doing same thing. |

And then today I switched my unit on and a picture of a desktop PC and i3 came up on screen with a message telling me to update turn by turn maps by using the supplied PC software. I had to switch it off and on again to get rid of the message. God knows what is going on. All very strange! |

I too have seen the "update maps from PC" screen a couple of times. I just ejected the TransFlash, reinserted it and wiggled it around a bit - seemed to make the problem go away for me. |

Tip - eject the Transflash card (with i3 powered off 8O) and then use a normal pencil eraser (rubber variety) vigourously on the gold contacts - being careful to blow off any spare crumbs - before reinserting card.
This will remove any oxidation or other gunge from the edge contacts, and should ensure that your i3 is less likely to forget it has maps loaded...if indeed it ever suffers thus...(mine doesn't).
