My nuvi has recently been taking up to 2 minutes to acquire satellites and failing to re-acquire them after being stuck in a tunnel. This started after upating to 2.70.

I sent the following to Garmin:

Since updating to 2.70 I have experienced two problems.
Firstly, it is now taking 90 seconds to acquire a satellite fix from cold start, which is more than when I first had the nuvi.
Secondly, when coming out of a multi storey car park or long tunnel, through which the gps fix is lost, the nuvi does not acquire the satellites immediately and often requires to be switched off and then on again, almost as if it has gone into 'sleep mode'

Today I had the following reply:

There have been some reported issues of these problems particulary in Italy.
Our software engineers are working on this issue at the moment.
Unfortunately there is no time scale on this next s/w update but we hope to release it shortly.

Further experimentation showed me that when I allowed the nuvi to acquire satellites from the main screen it was only taking about 45 seconds, but as soon as put it into map mode, or identified a route it was taking the 90 to 120 seconds.

With my Quest it's pretty random really. Sometimes you will have a first fix in 45 seconds, others it will take two or three minutes.

It seems to me that if you switch it on for a few minutes while you are inside then it takes longer to get a fix when you go outside but that may just be my imagination.

It definately does help if you don't move the GPS or obstruct it's view of the sky when you are waiting for a first fix.

As will all GPS systems I've used, they acquire more quickly is you stand still until they are ready

Now instead of entering the post codes of your destination in at home or in the office, do this in the car when you are about to set off, and you won't notice the lag

Not an answer, but saves you being impatient like me

Don't know exactly why, other than Garmin say it will be resolved in a software update due soon

Obviously they are aware of the programming error they made and will put it right

I would agree that the unit acquires the satellites quicker when stationary, but I did not notice the time delay until the latest update. Garmin have agreed that there is a problem, so can't just be a delay due to the motion of the car.

totally.

The delay is software driven, not because of motion - this just aggrevates the problem so until they fix it (soon), just a tip is to wait a minute or so (connect the Nuvi to the cig. lighter and it will switch on with your car engine. By the time you've belted-up etc. it's ready!)

Lets hope they update the next turn directions so it always says "then turn left" (for example) no matter what distance you are from the next turn, as this I think is more critical

Update 2.90 now available on Garmin's site. They seem to have skipped 2.80, even though 2.90 is billed as an update of it.
Garmin have also made a 'webupdater' available which works well, albeit a bit slower than downloading the update separately.
Lets hope that satellites are now acquired more quickly than after the last update.

Haven't been out with my Nuvi this morning, so cannot comment on the speed of sat acq. but they haven't fixed (yet) the roundabout issue we are all waiting for...

I must have missed something - what is the roundabout issue?

(I've upgraded without using the web updater and although the upgrade has worked fine I can't see much difference to anything - although I havn't tried the acquisition speed yet. I have a Nuvi 300 - perhaps it makes more difference to the 350 as I've noticed that upgrade is quite a bit larger.)

The "roundabout issue" is that the Nuvi doesn't tell you which turn to take off a roundabout (3rd exit, for example) until you are relatively close to the junction. There is / was a discussion in these forums where we all stated we would like this direction made clear immediately after the previous turn, no matter what distance to the roundabout (for example), so you are prepare to get in lane, when appropriate

The Nuvi 350 files are larger because of the Text to Speech files

I'm running 2.90 on my 350 and in the mornings and when leaving work it is taking 2 to 3 minutes to acquire a fix.

This is not what I expected from a Sirf III device...
