I have the chance to buy a second-hand Garmin Streetpilot that comes with a variety of UK and Europe maps on CD-ROM. I believe the maps are several years old. How easily can I update them? From where? Any idea of (rough) cost?

You can only buy updates from Garmin. The latest version is City Select (or Navigator) v7. Version 8 is due out at the end of the month. The cost of upgrading is about £100.
If you buy second hand then make SURE you get the CDs and unlock codes and that the seller is willing to tell Garmin that the unit has been sold to you.
Don't pay too much for an old GPS unit with outdated maps. Check the cost of a unit like the Quest or Street Pilot 320 which will come with the latest maps (full European coverage) either included or as a free upgrade.
Note that some sat nav units (like the i3) come with UK maps ONLY and the European maps are an expensive add-on if you need them.

Good luck!
I have been quoted $75 + VAT by Garmin UK. _________________ Tim
Thanks guys. For the asking price plus £75-100 I can probably get a brand new budget model with built-in maps - like an Advent - which might still be better than an old top-of-the-range one!
