I am trying to add POI to my TT1 but the only categories it is allowing me to assign it to are POIs that I have imported myself. Can I not assign it to one of the existing categories? |

I'm afraid not - the built in ones are "read only". |

Hi Pagemakers,
You can only add a POI to a custom category (i.e. ones that either you have created or downloaded, e.g. an .OV2 file). You cannot use the TomTom ONE to add a POI to any of the existing default POI categories that came with your TomTom ONE.
All of the default POI categories that came with your TomTom ONE are kept in a single file called POI.DAT. It’s not permitted to edit existing POIs found in the POI.DAT file.

AFAIA there's a couple of aspects of this that I haven't seen discussed much:
Have the inbuilt POIs been improved with subsequent map releases?
Do TomTom compile the POIs or do they buy them in from TeleAtlas (or elsewhere)?
Should we be sending in reports of errors just like we do with map errors?
Is there any chance that they will release POI updates as a (free?) downloadable, or only with new maps? |

They are supposed to be, yes. Whether they are or not is another question

Yes.

They are reportedly in the middle of a huge POI update which will see the POI database increase about 10 times the size. But this will only be included with new map downloads. |

Whilst you can not legally add poi's to your existing poi.dat file you can delete the existing file and build your own poi.dat file. I was very frustrated to find numerous entries such as swimming pools and libraries where the nearest entry was in France. Got it all sorted now - deleted the categories that I don't need and managed to shrink the file by 50%
Note that you can not change category names.
