Hey all

I would like to extract location information from my i3 on the move, in theory this should be easy enough to do as I suspect the data is fed out of the usb port for use on a pc, but is there any wiring diagrams on the web as to how I could get this out - how to wire the cable maybe ?

My theory is to make a new usb power lead out of a normal big to small and make a break out box somewhere i can plug the ower supply into and perhaps a second usb socket to connect a laptop or perhaps my treo phone to grab data etc...

Any thoughts out there ??

Cheers

Stephen

I don't think it will send data out through the USB port when in use TBH - AFAIK the data from the antenna is processed internally and there would be no use in sending it anywhere else.

I could be wrong though....

I have a mapsource cd that came with an older e-map (useful for adding favorites etc) and Im sure I managed to get it to show me where i was live when I had it plugged into my pc directly to upload favorites etc - but I could be mistaken it was a while ago when i did that, i could be getting myself confused (easily done these days sadly - Laughing Out Loud)

Cheers

The older GPS units used to send NMEA data out their serial ports. I'm pretty sure the newer ones do the same with the usb port.

You could try nroute from Garmin and see if that works with it.

Hmmm - I have MS AutoRoute 2005 on a laptop - and that only shows serial connections available to be configured for accepting external NMEA data from (ie. no USB option) ...any idea whether I can somehow attach my Streetpilot i3 to my laptop to 'drive' Autoroute in this way, please??

USB Garmins use a proprietory format, not NMEA - however, IIRC GpsGate can patch this through to NMEA on a virtual COM port.

Ahhhhh - yesssss - DEEP JOY!

He was spot on, you know! 8)

All you i3 owners who want to derive positional NMEA-compliant data from your units - using the standard supplied USB cable - really want to see this:

http://franson.com/gpsgate/download.asp?file=GpsGate.zip&ok=1

...and all for under £10 a copy licensed (Express Version).

A very happy,
