road angel gps solution

ok so i have a road angel and basically i was wondering if i buy a pda of some sort caould i connect it to my road angel to get gps on the pda?
if so what would be a good but cheap option to use as i want voice navigation?
would it be better and cheaper just to buy a package like a ipaq and a co-pilot sleve and software?
what do you trhink i should do???

Yes you can connect it via a cable. Cable will cost around £20-30. If you want a good PDA, stick with Pocket PC. HP iPAQ 2210 is one of the better ones, but it comes in at around £350. You can get cheaper ones like the Dell, but I prefer HP/Compaq.

You'll then need Navigator software which will cost in the region of £100 and will include maps.

i have heard that the co-pilot software is very good as all the maps are on one thing and that it actually says the road names to you rather than the normal turn right etc
is it better to buy a package deal wth the pda as it seems that it will cost around 500
what do you recon?

You're unlikely to get a package deal if you're going to not want a GPS Receiver.

If you take a look at the HP iPAQ 2210, it will set you back around £350, then you have the GPS Software/Maps on top of that. CoPilot is a good product, and it does speak road names. Most of the products will allow you to have complete UK maps rather than segmented maps.

If you don't go with a complete all-in solution, it will be more expensive. You have to bear in mind you'll need:-

- Pocket PC (from £299)
- Storage Card 128mb minimum (from £30)
- Pocket PC mount to mount Pocket PC in-car (from £20 to £60)
- GPS Software/Maps (from £100)

If you went for an all-in solution you could say get a Dell for under £400. Check out the Dell Axim X5 GPS bundle.

oh right well that looks good and a very good price
is that what you would do or are there better options out there also is having windows on it a good or is it as bad as having it on your pc ie expensive, crash and really expensive getting any other compatible software?

You have to soft reset sometimes (like restarting your PC), but most of the time it's okay.

My personal preference has been to go for the HP iPAQ 2210, it's just adorable, light and full of features!

It's louder than the 5xxx range from what I understand, but slightly quieter than the 38xx range. It's bearable, but most prefer to use external speakers or FM modulators.

ok so does the hp 2210 caome with a compatible sleeve like the rest of the hp range or can you only use it with a gps dongle as i can bear any more bits and wires i really like my friends systme of a compaq 3950 i think and a co-pilot sleve that just slides in to it and then attatches to the window or the vents in his car very easy to use just plug and play?
are there any systems like this for the 2210 ?

The 2210 doesn't support sleeves, but you can plug a GPS or charger into the bottom sync/serial port of the 2210, and you have two storage slots, SD and CF, whcih means that any CF type card can be used including mini cameras, GPS Receivers, projectors etc.

ok change of plan are there any gps pda solutions with voice around for about 300-400 pounds cheaper the better that have sleeve to clip and unclip as i dont want anymore wires as i already have a road angel and external gps i just want the small pda with voice and map directions what you think?

If you specifically want sleeves, you'll have to go with the older iPAQ's. The only solution you'll get all-in for £400 is the Holux/Dell or Dell/Leadtek bundles, and these do have leads, or a CF GPS card.

i dont mind having an older ipaq as i say i really wont be using the ipaq for much other than watching films checkin my email and trhe main use of sat nav i just dont know where to look for one of these and also i dont no what sleeve would be the best?
what one would you recomend? and where from dont really mind refurb ones if they have a guarentee or a place maybe to get second hand ones?

Check out one of our sponsors Total PDA, they do refubished units, probably best bet would be a 3970 this has Bluetooth in (3950 doesn't), and the 39 range has a 400Mhz Processor compared to the 206Mhz of the 38 range.

Don't forget to add VAT to the prices quoted though!
