I don't understand that. The satellites don't know your current position, so how could they transmit data about the traffic in your area? This seems to propagate the (it seems) widely held view that 'the system' (as opposed to just your receiver) knows where you are.
Ever heard of black boxes. Record the track of the GPS as you move and be required to send the data weekly/monthly. All the technology is there.[/quote] |

Why weekly/monthly? Perfectly possible over GPRS or private radio to do it in real-time. |

With the current technology, they can't.
What the traffic integration in sat nav systems does is get traffic information using Traffic Message Channel broadcast on FM radio or GPRS / Internet using a mobile phone.
There are already GPS/GSM systems out there that will track your movements and report them to a central system (for fleet management etc). It is also possible that the GPS receiver would store position data and upload it periodically using a similar system.
This is being seriously considered as part of a road pricing scheme... _________________ Gone fishing! |

Yeah and we all know that the people at the top earning the big bucks and running the country will price mr average off the road so those with the money can cruise about whilst we all sit at home not being able to afford to go anywhere.
Rant over.....
Cheers
