Please could someone clarify what use the code card has that came with my tomtom one. Why do I need it?
Also are all tomtoms only able to read the specific SD card supplied with them. Does the Tomtom associate its self with the card when its inserted. I did not need to enter any code to start my Tomtom working.
Finally if it is possible to paste POI onto a Tomtom SD card, such as the Traffic safety camera updates talked about within theses forums, Then what stops people producing third party gps maps and using them by placing them on the SD card in a similar way.

Hi tomthumb, welcome aboard the Forum.
The number you have on the card is the Product Code. This is tied to the Product that is on your SD card.
What happens is that the Product Code and the Device Number are digitally 'united' to give an Activation Code. You haven't had to use it yet because your Maps have been pre-activated.
Don't lose the card. You will need the information when you want to do a Map Upgrade.
Yes you can add POI's from here, and lots of other places. To make room you might have to delete some of the unused voices. You can do this from the Change Preferences Menu.
Please read as many of the various guides that you can before you start changing anything,
With the TT1 you would be able to look at only 1 Map at a time, and please do a FULL BACKUP of the SD Card before anything else. There are no other copies of your Map, other than what is on your SD Card.
I don't fully understand your last point, but the POI's are not Maps but place reference points on the Maps you have. _________________ Richard

As for POIs and maps, yes you can simply add POI categories by copy and pasting from the PC into your map folder, but to produce a third-party map itself would be a monsterous task There are only two or three companies in the world doing it.
I've never even heard it suggested before, but if you could work out a way to even edit existing maps, everyone here would love you forever! . |

One thing Oldboy left off his excellent description, is that you get the Activation code by going to www.ttcode.com and entering your Product and Device codes.
You can do that now if you like and get an activation code, but you won't need it unless you change maps, SD cards or there is a MAJOR software update (like from 5.xx to 6.xx).
If and when that happens, the TomTom will ask you to enter the code using a new keypad that will come up on screen. |
