The only solution I've seen is to go to the Active Sync app and then disable USB..
That's the point, Microsoft do not provide that facility with MS ActiveSync. There is no way you can use 'Stop Hardware' in that application.
See this from the GPS Forum January Newsletter "

ActiveSync... that wonderful Microsoft program for synchronising data between your PDA and PC.
It loads itself automatically, syncs your PDA with your PC, then sits there, patiently waiting to synchronise any piece of data that you change. So why the need for ActiveSync Toggle then...
Well, annoyingly (at the time of writing) Microsoft have yet to include a facility to 'Load ActiveSync at Startup' or even an 'Exit' option from the System Tray Icon.
If, like us, you don't sync your PDA every minute of the day, it means ActiveSync is sitting around in memory using up valuable resources. Even more annoying is the fact that if you try to remove the registry entry that automatically loads ActiveSync, it very kindly adds it again (as long as it's running) meaning it always stays open.
ActiveSync Toggle allows you to either load or unload ActiveSync from memory whilst also removing the registry key that automatically loads it upon starting Windows.

I have just downloaded December's POIs and went to update my iCN510 with the data but MS Active sync would not recognise the device. I checked for later software and found v 4.1.0 (Build 4841) on the MS site and downloaded it and overwrote the old version. Reconnected the Navman and it was instantly recognised. However, when I started the Smart ST Desktop (v3 for iCN series i3_1_2_31) it come up with the dialog " A problem with your iCN has been detected. Power off and on to fix the problem then click OK." Did this with no result....several times, in fact.
Thought I would check with Navman Technical Support but on navigating to the tech support web site it tells me
Quote:
Error. The page you are trying to access is not available
This has been the case for some time (for me). There seems no way to contact them.
1. Has anyone any idea what the problem is with my device
2. Does anyone have a similar problem with Navman tech. Support
3. Is there a later version of Smart ST Desktop
Any help suggestions etc. would be very welcome. Thanks.
Hi, I have just got a Navman iCN520 and it is using SmartST 2005.
I originally had trouble using activesync with it. Although the computor recognised that new hardware was added, the activesync could not identify it. After several attempts at disconnecting and reconnecting it, it finally worked, and has worked ever since

For those that have been reading this post, I have now had a response from Navman (query dated 31st December, response 9th January)
Well, they did say they were busy.....
The answer to my query of why the SmartST Desktop software was,
Quote:
Please try resetting your Navman via the off/on switch on the reverse
So there! Not very helpful as I already told them that is what I had been doing.
Anyway, I solved the problem myself after some time. As posted, it was my AV software and firewall. Problem solved. _________________ Gee-Pee
