If you do go PocketPC there are a number of options available to you for mapping and navigation.
These range from Maptech Outdoor Navigator at $100 with unlimited downloads of Topographical maps and Nautical charts, to Fugawi, Memory Map, Pocket Navigator, and others which combine a PC planning application with PDA display and navigation.
All of these have detailed charts of the US costal waters. _________________ Mike Barrett |

A recent lightning strike took out my old reliable waterproof Magellan DLX GPS. It used to work pretty well with my laptop running Cap'n software for a moving nautical map but the screen was near impossible to read by daylight and a little unwieldy with my soldered RS232 connections.
I've priced replacements such as the Garmin colored models at West Marine but they require using their dedicated purchased maps which are a little lacking in detail compared to what I had before. (Nice user interface and features though)
Since I own a T-mobile Pocket PC Phone and have it with me constantly I was hoping someone could recommend a solution using it that gives me GPS on a moving nautical map. Water resistance and small size are big pluses, cheaper would be nice too. |

You could go the PDA route, it's quite expensive though, but it would allow you to use the Garmin as a receiver and connect the Garmin to the Pocket PC. You would have to purchase a seperate marine program for the Pocket PC though to include maps. |

Thanks for the responses.
OK - let's say I use my T-mobile pocket PC phone (PPCPh) and purchase Maptech's Outdoor Navigator with unlimited nautical map downloads for a year (no 3D charting or Nav photos - available for more $ through pocket navigator).
Now it seems I need a GPS receiver with NMEA 0183 output (does version matter?) and a data cable to the PPCPh. (Where to purchase?).
Some surfing comes up with
1) Pharos model PK-035 ($214) including their Ostia voice navigation software.
2) Holux GPS receiver for PPCPh $122.
3) Any of the little Garmins or Magellans but data cables for PPCPh nowhere to be found.
4) On pocket PC Techs forum their is a picture of a PPCPh with BUILT-IN GPS posted Jan 2003 but I've never even heard of this prodect until 5 minutes ago.
Any further recommendations and suggestions on the various cables for #3 above?
Thanks in advance.

Jeffrey, if you check the second table in our GPS Compatibility page, you should get a better answer if you want to see what Pocket PC's support which receivers.
For the T-Mobile, you'll be looking at a Leadtek 9531/9532, RoyalTek Sapphire or Holux GM-210
Leadtek 9531, Leadtek 9532, RoyalTek Sapphire, Holux GM-210, and a Haicom 203E.
Checking the fourth table, shows that PC-Mobile do support Garmin and Magellan cables to the T-Mobile Pocket PC so you've also got this as another option. |

Again thanks - truly useful info.
Can the Leadtek 9532 be purchased or mail ordered to the US? How much? - for some reason I can't seam to get that from the website. |

I think so, try looking at TDC and emailing web.sales@tdc.co.uk. |
