Darren,
Thank you for publishing your intentions and charges for the database.
You seem to have ‘taken on board’ comments made regarding ‘previously submitted’ Speed Cameras by forum members.
In fact you have taken the ‘wind out of the sails’ of many by offering:-
Quote: | There will be Free Lifetime membership for those who have already contributed to the original speed camera database. |
Quote: | This is for anyone who has submitted data to the database, be it one camera or regular submissions and will be include ALL submissions until midnight tonight. |
I can safely bet that there will be a mad rush by members to ‘submit’ in the next 2½ hours!!!!!!!
As one of the people who made adverse comments and had posts removed, I am honest enough to admit that I will still download @ £2/time when I drive out of my ‘local’ area!
The choice is there!
There is no further need for bad feeling, just vote with your finger!
Stay, or move to the alternate database.
Constructive criticism is a good thing, but criticism of the new ‘charging policy’ is now a waste of time and space!
My first wish:-
Is that Richard [Oldie] is given the respect and consideration by the ‘management’ and 'members' for his incredible contribution to the database.
My second wish:-
I wish the Members and Management ‘the best for 2006 with a photo-free future’! |

Speaking on behalf of the team and as one who ran the database in it's early days I can honestly say that we recognise and appreciate his work and never stop reminding him! The database admin is a huge and never ending task.

And the very best to all for 2006, if ever I needed a drink it's this year ;) _________________ Darren Griffin |

just a shame its not up to date, best way to save is to keep to limit or chuck detector into the mix.
What next? £ to join a car forum to share tips ect?

Already been done :
www.ffoc.co.uk (Ford Focus owners club)
Quote: |
How much does it cost to become an FFOC member & how do I join?
To join the club there is a membership fee of:
# £20: This is the standard membership fee for 1 years exclusive FFOC membership.
Why is there a fee?
In order for the FFOC to improve its services to it's members it requires funding. Funding also helps with marketing, subsidising events and purchasing club merchandise.
There are FREE clubs on the net. But being a funded club, we can use membership money to improve the club. |
End result - a fantastic resource for focus owners, and a very successful and popular club.
Cheers

well i think it is a very fair system
must say though
only a fool with a site like this (more like a gps hub) would be so daft to not consider starting their own online sales / supply of gps kit as i pretty much bet that at some point almost everyone who gets a gps setup will end up here
just my 2p |

Well
I have at last sent in 3 of the 7 odd cameras (fixed and Mobile) that are not on the database.
Scotland does appear to be a bit under-represented at present.
Having watched all the debate I thought I might as well submit my offerings. I guess it has at least spurred me on to take action and to beat the Midnight deadline!
My regret is that I should really have done this before now.
The POI upload should make it easier once I get it to work with my TomTom300.
As a point of interest there are now quite a few Cameras 'up here' that are no longer in operation, but are still on the database (2 on the A92 that I know of at least). How do I go about getting these removed so as to improve the accuracy for everyone.
Moving forward the accuracy will be what will dictate useage and thus downloads thus revenue.
It takes a long time to build up a good reputation but it can be lost in the blink of an eye.
How often do you tell your friends/relatives about good service? then think how much more time you spend spreading the word about 'the worst ever' or 'Dont ever buy from.....'
I really do hope it all works out.
£2 is a small price to pay for GOOD data that is of outstanding use. Just think how much we spend on Mobile phones/Subscription TV/Broadband each month! Puts it in perspective I guess.
Good luck |

This was a done and dusted deed, probably from the first camera submission. |
With resepect, you have made your views crystal clear and we have stated ours. |
So the poll was a pointless exercise then? You message that you have "stated yours" indicates that the decision was made immaterial of what the poll results were. |

If, as was stated earlier in this thread, that any users that have submitted data to the database before midnight on Friday 29 December 2005 are to get free lifetime membership, and as a result, free access to the database, would it not be a good idea to fix the forum's time, so that as i post this at 23:46 on Thursday 28 December, the forum is saying that the time is 10:36 on Friday 29 December on the main forum page??
That could be a problem eh!?! |

OOPS!! Just found my timezone was set to +10 in my profile, so my previous post is just an itty bit wrong!!
Not entirely though!
Now I've set it to GMT (UK Winter time etc etc) it's still an hour out so it's still saying that the time is one hour ahead of where it actually is. (posted this as 23:53 for example.
Weird innit!?

Darren,
Will recording the speeds for TBA cameras also earn contributors credits? _________________ Jock

Thats good news ive got a few updates here which I keep needing to get round to submitting but im not going to rush to get them in before midnight as its already passed and ive sunmitted updates in the past.
This should hopefully please the submitters and encourage people to keep contributions something I was a bit miffed of doing if I was going to have to pay per download.
The annual fee is also a good thing. |
