How to cope with waypoints

Hi all,

I am just trying to get my head around how to handle the various formats of waypoints, routes, POI etc.

Is there a generic file format (and a program for handling and converting them)?

I am most interested in exchanging the waypoints/routes between a Garmin Etrex Summit and Tom Tom 2 and Memory Map.

Also, what Pocket PC program is recommended for transferring waypoints to and from the Etrex Summit?

Thanks for the help. I appreciate there's probably no solution to this problem but some general pointers would be helpful.

Hello Matt

I use memorymap and it certainly easy to input waypoints into that as an ascii file. Download Tech support bulletin 3 from the memory map website to see a detailed explanation.

I only use it to get the PocketGPS speed camera database onto memorymap and that works very well except it is not possible to write a proximity zone into the file. If you want those you have to do each one individually! (unless anyone elso knows a way?)

There is a programme which you may have seen mentioned before here - POI Edit http://www.dnote.nl/pda/poi/PoiEdit/

which will allow you to convert TomTom OV2 files to text files (and I presume viceversa).

Hope someone else can help you with the Garmin to TomTom bit.

Thanks for that - it's a good start.

I suppose with all the different formats etc I was thinking there might be a niche program that could handle them all. Maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Anyway, I'll follow up on your advice.

My Windows program POI2wpt in the Downloads area will convert TomTom Navigator POI to Garmin PCX5 waypoint format. The PCX5 data can be imported into Garmin MapSource and passed to the eTrex.

Memory Map Navigator will also import Maptech files so I will have a go at writing a conversion program. At present I use a text editor (TextPad) to reformat the data to TTN text format.

I have just been playing trying to do waht you described and it hasnt worked. Heres what I did, where did I go wrong.

converted the camera.ov2 to text.
opened this in excel and added the text described in bulletin #3 by putting them in the column after the data and copying down to the last entry.
saved as filename camera.mxf in text format.
copied across to memory map folder in IPAQ.

What have I dont wrong, does it need to go to a specific floder on the IPAQ or did I do the text input wrong?

I don't think the memory map on the Ipaq reads the .mxf file however I havn't tried that way as I always import the .mxf file into the pc desktop version of memory-map first and then export the waypoints to the ipaq. Never had any trouble with that!

After much messing about I have managed to get the camera database into memory map on teh IPAQ and I got the proximity alarms to go in too.

I couldn't fathom out how to do it for a while so I ended up exporting my own marks into CSV, one happened to have a proximity alarm set so I was able to see which column of data was the proximity alarm.

I then made a file which looked like the file I exported but using the camera database and there it is.

It works as I live within 750m of a camera and the alram was going off in the garden! I will try it tomorrow whist driving.
