Autoupdates to your PDA will now be a thing of the past wont it ? Atleast 2 apps would be needed otherwise POIedit and A-Another to do the same job currently.

In theory POIedit should work just fine. POIEdit supports usernames and password when downloading updated. So what can happen is, you create an account on PGPSW and pay for your updated, you are then given a username/password that has access to download these updates. You put them into Poiedit and away you go. Poiedit does *not* download the updates every time you dock, it checks to see if they are different, and if they are, it downloads them.
This is a system that www.poihandler.com uses if I am not mistaken. If you open up your autoupdate manager and check under poihandler.com you'll see all their databases, but you won't be able to download them until you put in a valid username/password.
Should be no problem at all to get a simular system working over here and thus we can keep our automatic updates. |

I would be interested to receive an answer from Pocketgps to this.
Do Pocketgps regard the data supplied by forum members as being covered by copyright or not? |

About 4 weeks ago I bought my first car GPS (TomTom 500).
In the box was an advert for TomTom Live services (traffic/speed cameras etc), included was a free trial of traffic but not speedcameras.
So i began a search for a free speed camera resource and I re-found this site.
I was not amazed that such a free database existed I kind of expected it coming from a development role I could see how simple it would be to create an automate the creation and distribution of one would be.
If I hadn't have re-found this resource as free but as chargable I would not have subscribed but have either payed for the TomTom db or not payed at all.
The reason is simple, TomTom is company with a brand that I trusted with my purchase of a GPS device, they have lots of visibilty adverts made by dixons/pcworld etc.
This site may have better quality of data but this is irrelevant to new users.
Will they give their money to the company they trust? or will they gamble it on website they have found on the internet by chance?
Its unlikely that I will not pay the 2ukp a month if the number of updates is published each month with the refreshed db.
Having said that if a free alternate takes off and I can help with a couple of hours of programming here or there they I would gladly help out |

Conroyd, that was my first thought too. When i read "attics" post i thought here we go another person who has just jumped in.
Attic read the whole thing. How many times must one make the statement that this baby was and still is conceived from members input.
Members input, Richard, a member collates it, PGPSW host it.
See anything strange here?
Argh! why are we worrying about it Con,
The alternative is well under way so hopefully this will become an irrellevance. Just such a shame about the site in general and the good people you come across and that includes the mods and directors.
Anyway, it's back to Holland today, so you guys all have a good christmas members, mods and Directors. When i cut through the flak somewhere i can still see some festive spirit. |

you've completely missed the point, it's not how much they want to charge for our database, in most people eyes (including mine) it's the principle
they can charge what they like for access to the forums, news, reviews, specialised content etc. but the database is a shared effort _________________ SW

The original motivation of those that contributed to this database was to help others. It would seem that your motivation for making this "professional" is your own greed. You have a great database already, you don't NEED to start charging for it. Are the HUGE costs of hosting this site really not being covered by the adverts? Care to share your accounts with us?
If you go commercial do you expect people to keep contributing to your wealth? Sure, it'll be cheap (to start with) but can you resist the urge to increase prices for your own profit? Oh, and prepare to start being sued, people don't generally sue volunteers but if you're making money..
It's your train set, so do what you like with it, just don't expect people to see going "professional" as anything other than lining YOUR pockets from other people's efforts. Let's hope somebody starts an alternative free database soon.
This is a sad day.

Well said Alan. That is exactely how I felt when I read the announcement. |
I notice the hope is somebody else starts an alternative free database. Put your actions where your mouths are chaps and start that alternative free database yourselves. You might find you've bitten off more than you can chew. I for one wouldn't support you.
I for one would update monthly but would prefer to pay yearly but can understand there is work involved in setting up a system to track expiry of annual subs. Perhaps later?

One simple question.
Do the people who take raw data, and collate, sort and represent that data in an enhanced form have a right to charge for their services if they so wish?
My own personal view is that they do, and it is my personal choice if I choose to pay for their enhancement.

"Somebody else" has started a free database. So actions are already in place of mouths.
If you read through the posts you will find the URL. |

What mushroom have you been hiding under?. Just for the record we have put our actions where are mouths are and the base is already coming together. So perhaps you can spend your time finding it and perhaps contribute something of substance. |

At the end of the day these guys put there time into doing reviews, providing news and updating and collating the speed camera database. I am not condoning what they are doing with regards the amount they are charging for the downloads but you can’t always get something for nothing. How many of you have honestly contributed to the database? I know I have not updated one camera on the database and feel like I have been getting a service for nothing. At the end of the day if you do not want to pay then find another free database or buy a hardware detector.
Peace out 8) _________________ Regards

I've just read the database' accompanying license for the first time and, apparently, it belongs to PGPSW
what's more, they'll charge you £2000, per database version (so basically per month), if you want to offer the database without acknowledging PGPSW or £5000 per version per month if you use it without their consent.
I don't remember seeing any disclaimer re: any camera submissions to PGPSW made by us become the intellectual property of PGPSW
correct me if I'm wrong... _________________ SW

does not give them ownership of the data provided to them despite their claim to copyright of it.

Some of the people who provided the data for THIS database, wish simply to continue using it under the conditions of original agreement which governed its use.
If Pocketgps wish to change those conditions then then should seek permission from everyone whose data is current in the database. |

the raw data *cannot* be copyright. It exists. Nothing is created. Just reporting something that exists gives the reporter no copyright or other ownership. The data could just as easily have been submitted by others and/or taken from another database - the camera partnerships own info. Perhaps the data that *you* supplied was only used as a cross check on a camera who's location was already known.
What can be copyrighted is the creation of a collection of data that is presented in a certain way. The process of collection and presentation creates something new - the database. Those that did the actual creating own the copyright.
Taking this database and reproducing it elswhere is no more or less than copyright theft and is in the same category as P2P or Warez. I doubt that PGPSW will care too much since it will be impossible to prevent some "filesharing". Also, the database as it exists *now* will soon become out of date. Both PGPSW and others can build on this to create future versions, and the "free" database arguably does have an element of moral ownership by the contributors. What I am sure won't be tolerated for ever is someone continuing to freeload what will become a different animal - a paid for, professionally verified product. |

so if PGPSW have been charging companies £2000 / £5000 for use of OUR db, are we not entitled to royalties from this? |
