Hi! We see you’re using an ad-blocker. We’re fine with that and won’t stop you visiting the site.
But as we’re losing ad-revenue from this then why not make a donation towards website running costs?. Or you could disable your ad-blocker for this site. We think you’ll find our adverts are not overbearing!

A simple answer to a simple problem.
Choice !
Offer several ways of paying for the database, it was too good to be true in the modern world anyway, getting something for nothing, when other were paying for the same product, was never going to last that long, now was it.
The trouble is when your hobby starts demanding more and more of your time, if you are not careful, it ends up feeling like work.
So my idea is a simple offer.
£2 per download, for those that want to try the service out.
£7.50 per year for quarterly updates
£11 per year for bimonthly updates
£20 per year for monthly updates
£25 per year for site membership, with member only area and twice monthly updates, discounts at linked sites, that sort of thing
£50 for 3 year membership with all the trimmings, plus free month prize draw for reviewed gear.
£75 For 10 years membership with ................
You get the idea
The prices don't really matter, that should reflect the level of service you intend to give your "customers", and all the other hassle that come with "customers". Rather than a group of friendly people as is now, you can forgive friends for a lot, customer generaly don't forgive any one for any thing !
The key things is, to supply a range of options at a range of prices, so the people that use the service can decide for them selves how much they want to spend, depending on the level of service they require.
No one objects to paying for something they find useful, you just have to match the cost of the product, to how useful it is.
Simple, give me the choice to decide how much I want to spend and the choice to pay for the level of service that suits me.

Will it be keyed per user? What is to stop people re-selling it on ebay or posting it on their own sites as per now? Will I be able to download it once, and deploy it to all my employees or will there be a site license?
Think you are all going to have to face the idea that they will be charging and nothing you say or do is going to change things.....
This thread will run and run prob way past 50 pages... I like the idea of charging for the latest version and using a 12month old version as a freebie so you can see what it's like..
I pay £4.95 a month for my Snooper updates and I don't mind at all

Wilbo123 - fantasic post
A range of membership levels and durations would enable people to have a choice.
What about service and support? a lot of posters have mention they would expect a service?
What would we want from that? _________________ Thanks,

This should be a discussion but being told to shut and and stop whinging doesn't fall into that category either does it.
Quite right Alan, and thankyou for not escalating the situation.
Pickie, please refrain from offering such advice as telling people to leave. This discussion is all about leaving feedback about the news item, not making suggestions as to what people who don't like the contents of that article can do. _________________ Tim

I forgot to add the six monthly free updates !!
And don't forget, it has to be delvered in a way and at a cost that stops the databace appearing as "speedcamera.torrent" in file sharing sites, not forgeting it was that kind of "sharing spirit" that made this site the site it is.
So for the price is has to be easier to get the updates for here than it is to download it from "some where else" for free.
Good point - I wouldn't envisage it being a soley technical area...... more of a place where specialsts are available to help and support members.
The website I was referring to earlier has this type of arrangement - the trained specialsts look after the members forum and spend some time on the free forum. It seems to work very well.
And no I havent seen a review of the ONE either - I've heard it's pretty good though.
Chris, that is what bikersoracle does now. It works very very well - everyone is happy with the way it works and the site makes money.

I agree Alan. We all have choices & they can be exercised without the 'I am right - you are' wrong scenario. As the sayong goes 'you pays your money and take your choice'.

Tim, I was not suggesting that people should not leave feedback. Many of the posts are very constructive - I was having a go at the whiners. We live in a democratic society and therefore this is my right. It does not make me right or wrong, it is an opinion. For clarification I was suggesting that the scrooges opt out of the database, not the forum.
However, if one is not prepared to pay 20 quid a year to protect an almost invaluable asset (driving licence) then as I said one has the choice o off and cease whining. How did these people get the 200 or 300 quid for the sat nav in the first place! Maybe someone gave it to them for free - yeah right.
I know you started you own database that's why I am happy to pay you 2 quid a download. Even though I am irish I have figured out that 20 -50 quid a year is cheaper than starting my own database by a factor of about 500 - not to metion the zillions of hours around with it.
Whining is for girls - I repeat - go away!
You appear to be short of understanding.
1. 20 quid a year is not much at all, however it's a matter of principle not of price - the database has always been a free service and suddenly it's not going to be.
2. 200-300 quid = 149.99 for a Garmin i3, cheaper for some of the other options.
3. Starting your own database is not expensive, and not rocket science. The site should be earning money from other means - affiliation, promotion, advertising etc. It gets plenty of hits - this thread alone over 30,000.
4. To protect your driving license, drive within the law. Cost = nothing. Speed camera databases exist for those who choose to defend their illegal driving at above the speed limit, I know plenty of people with clean driving licenses who have no detection equipment - I wonder why that is.
I am Irish Tim - probably why I am short of understanding!
So, only £150 quid for a Garmin - where can get one of those for free?
Would you consider starting a new database - I will join once you have it up & running.
You must be the only peron on the driving planet that does not exceed the speed limit inadvertantly. I think I detect a holier than thou attitude.

Dence question.. but has any one thought hwo POIEdit will work with this 'new' service ?
Autoupdates to your PDA will now be a thing of the past wont it ? Atleast 2 apps would be needed otherwise POIedit and A-Another to do the same job currently.

Tiss a sad day indeed.
My personal feelings are that a charge of £2.00 per download or £12 per year would stop all the bad feelings here.
£12.00 per year would be so small that you would pay it, maybe reluctantly, but would.
Because the data is free at this time it would be possible for someone to take that and alter it only slightly but enough for it to be used and added to for free by another web site. They would have a big start with all the current data, and people could again send in new camera positions, if they took new data from this web site (at a later date) they could again check to make sure that there data was near enough to be usable. And what then if they started charging, but only half what was asked here?
£2.00 per month (or) £12.00 per year, just do it now.
WHAT ABOUT A POLL, WITH SOME SENSIBLE CHARGES LISTED TO VOTE ON.

This might be worth PGPSW taking a look and perhaps a talk with the admin about the financials.
