Right, im about to take the plunge and get myeself a pda with integrated GPS, im being swayed by the Mio 168 but note that there seems to be a patch out for the A201 so that you can use TT5, so im thinking if thats true that would be the pda to go for?

Now in my mind the hardest part is the software selection.

I am going to be buying this software mainly for trips abroad to the mountains, and as such would quite like seemless boarder crossings, im not thrilled by the shut down and restart options.

I noticed that TT seems to have a Alpine region of maps covering several countries but seems to lack france in that selection!

I guess in my view im headding to the Mio A201, with TT5. However if anyone can tell me that Copilot significantly better at cross europe, or even just better at street level europe then TT i would happily buy the Mio 168 with copilot.

I was thinking of getting a 1Gb memory card with it.

I'd love to hear anyones thoughts on this setup with relation to its purpose, and if anyone has thoughts on better pdas with integrated GPS i'm more then open....

Thanks!!

oh i forgot to mention that full postcode search is a must. And if someone seriously believes that one version of the software is much better then the other then even my seamless cros boardering is negotiable... (ish!)

tomtom doesnt allow street level cross border what you would have to do is use the gb plus map which is street level uk plus major roads or europe and then use the country map when near you destination

copilot does allow cross border routing so no map swithing both peices of software allow full uk postcode as for mapping there about the same in my experience

I have been using the Mo 168 for some time now & along with TT5 & Memory maps for MTB ing it has all worked very well.

I am looking at the new Mio (201) but I will stick with the 168 for now until all the software problems have been sorted along with any other problems that might come along after people have had a chance to fiddle with them.

If your sure that the software you want will work OK with the new Mio then I would go for the 201 as it has a better GPS receiver & the new Windows 5 which looks good, but for the money the 168 is very good value & has always picked up very good GPS signals even indoors.

There doesnt seem to be too much difference in peoples opinions about the TT and the copilot software so i'd be looking at the A201 with TomTom or (a last minute entrant!) the Holux with Copilot!

One thing i just cant figure out is why the TT software seems to come on 7cds and why copilot is much smaller, is there 'more' POI and other stuff on the TT software??

TomTom do not support map cutting or cross map routing. Instead they have provided multiple permutations and map cuts (single states, state groups, regions, etc). Hence the larger number of CDs

Well after a little price investigation it would appear that full european maps on TT is about £119, as opposed to about £240 for copilot, so i think thats pretty much solved that one for me....

Copilot would have to be pretty special to be worth double the price....

Even with this it still won't plot cross border. You plot to the border and then change map once you get there to plot to your destination.

I tell you what this is giving me a serious headache!!

I was looking at TT, and dont mind changing maps once i get to the boarder, but no one i spoke to could tell me if the TT software would let me plot a route from one european city to the next, taking me to the correct boarder corssing where i then change map, or if it would say sorry cant find that route....

any thoughts?

I have loaded up the Great Britain Plus map, this is on a PDA, it has just calculated a route from my home in Blackpool to Jaroslawa Dabrowskiego A total of 1375 Miles, so it will work crossing Europe with no problems, the only occasion to swap maps is if you want detailed street level mapping once you get to where you are going, alternativley get a 2GB card and load the entire lot onto the card, doing this would necesitate map swapping along the way, whereas the Plus map avoids this. Thanks a lot everyone, i think on the back of that i'll be opting for the TomTom software, i cant justify double the price for Copilot...

As for the PDA im looking at the Holux which seems to be a lot better at picking up signals...

Im a little annoyed that global positioning systems dont deliver to the channel islands, since im not intending to pay the VAT!!

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, and i'll post an update on how impressed i am soon!
