Globalsat SD-502The PocketGPSWorld.com GPS Event in Basingstoke seems like a long time ago now but it is only 2 weeks. Quite a few products were launched at the event one of which was the Globalsat SD-502.

The Globalsat SD-502 is a GPS receiver which contains 512Mb of memory as well. This allows you to have your map data on the SD card overcoming one of the problems of the original SD-501. Now devices like the XDAII can use the SD-502 in a useful manner as previously any maps had to be held on the PDA memory, now they can be saved to the GPS SD card...

At PocketGPSWorld.com we are once again impressed with the innovative products produced by Globalsat. We are currently working on a full review, but in the meantime click here to read the full article.

I have never been too keen on the idea of using SDIO GPS receivers as i have always found them to be flimsy and most of them look like they will break very easily as the SD slot is simply to slim and small to support the large device. Its good that it has 512 meg of memory for map space as this would be essential if you only have one source of expandable memory.

Mike

I had - long story - SysonchipCF with 512MB

SD502 looks like ideal replacement
Does it have an external antenna/MMCX socket?

There is no external antenna socket on the SD-502. It ahem just fell to pieces in my hands ( I am ever so clumsy) and there is no indication in the design that an external antenna can or will in the future be fitted.

I suppose while it is in bits I should take a few photos...

Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to reduce yours to it's component parts Mike. Just so I can avoid doing the same to mine.
Photos would be handy, save taking mine apart.

Well if truth be known a cross head screwdriver accidently fell into my hand then twisted 3 times whilst in the proximity of the GPS. Embarassed

Pictures will be posted in the review which will be published shortly.

I keep mine locked up in a tool box which I can never find when I need one, I'll wait for the photos.
Interestingly I had to revert to TT GPS 2.06 driver to get mine to work with TT V3. Com 7 GPSUart @ 4800. With the 3.07 driver it wouldn't let me select com 7.
In GPS Info I'm getting 6 Sats with the XDA 2 sat in it's cradle on the desk 8ft from the nearest window, very impressive. Gives a much neater installation in the car not having the wires from the GPS receiver.
