Asked this a while ago, but still looking for a POI for UK petrol stations... the ones I have tried all seem to get the smaller local ones quite a way from where they should be !
Thanks |

Like many POI databases I imagine manyof the coordinates have been translated from postcode lists hence given the common location of petrol stations (isolated, commercial areas, often not in built-up areas etc) the inherent errors in doing this will come into play.
Positional errors aside, I've found the petrol station offering at www.tomtomfree.com to be one of, if not the, biggest at >8k entries IIRC if that's of any interest.

I am in the process of compiling an uptodate petrol listing. So far I have 5 suppliers, as singles and a combined, and try to locate the sites using several search sites because the Postcodes supplied are very rarely updated.
It's a good starting point but that is all. If you care to give them a try you will find then at the Web address below. _________________ Richard

Good work oldboy....
Any chance of adding LPG filling stations. I know there was a POI out before but it is so outdated now.

Richard, many thanks for this.
An up to date list of petrol stations is actually more useful than the list of GATSOs!
With the recent closure of so many petrol stations I assume that people are reporting updates back to you if they find discrepancies with your list? But I'm sure your list will be more up to date than the one supplied with TTN5.

For LPG Gas petrol stations - we have created an up to date list from the National LPG Gas Association. They supplied with a list of all stockists and this is what we split into the forecourted and non-forecorted LPG's. It should be correct since its an industry supplied list.
They are available from our website FOR FREE;
www.tomtomfree.com
We have also a list of normal petrol stations as mentioned by another poster, with more than 8,000 entries. Unfortunately with recent closures some will be out of date, this will always be true of any POI's.
We are in the process of revising this list. The trouble of course with POI's is the effort required to update the lists, and then host this.
We are working on farming out various POI lists to the owners of the business concerned, but its a slow process. Its unlikely that we will have this for petrol stations anytime soon.

My experience of address accuracy is that it's not very. Accurate that is.
Usually it's the Postcode that is wrong, sometimes the address. It's not unusual to have a 10% error list. _________________ Richard

hope I dont offend anyone but I have to say Oldboy's petrol station POIs are far more accurate.
Tomtomfree.com's one is also missing quite a lot of the stations altogether |

An up to date list of car parks would be nice too.
Cheers

I'm obviously in a minority but why on earth do you need a list of petrol stations? Its not as though they are in short supply is it?
Given that you can do something like 150-200 miles on a tank of gas I'm sure you'll go past a dozen or so petrol stations in that time?
I can understand peeps looking for LPG stations which are presumably still fairly scarce, but petrol stations?????
And as for up to date car parking . . . . . guys, remember when we used to look out of the window for blue signs with a white P in it?
I'd be one of the first to stand behind the pro-GPS lobby and think that TomTom Navigator is a terrific piece of software but it is only an aid.
Lets keep a little bit of wonderment out there.
O.K. I've done . . . . . take your best shot |

And up steps Lupos0_1 for the first shot
I can understand the need for an up to date petrol station POI list. I do many miles on the road for both work and personal needs. For work, my company has an account set up with one of the major petrol station companies. It allows me to fill up there and this gets charged on the account. If I am in the middle of nowhere, it is handy to find this.
Also, when I am not working, I refuse to pay the prices that motorway services charge (my partner is from Yorkshire so we are well suited ).
This leaves me with two options:
1. Fill up and drive off without paying (not advisable I dont believe)
2. Come off the motorway and find a petrol station that charge realistically (although as we are in the UK, this is still over the top!!!)
It is easier to have this and an up to date car park list as this is what the POI feature on tomtom is meant to be used for. Your argument could be used for the speed camera POI's, whats the point of having them if you can just keep on the look out for those lovely yellow boxes _________________ -------------------------------------------------------
