The Plus maps do work seamlessly throughout Western Europe, but only at Street Level in 1 Country, and only Major Roads elswhere.

Does this mean that if, say, I install France and Germany and Major European Roads onto an SD card (which I'm using in conjunction with TomTom One) I can choose to navigate seamlessly either from a minor road in France to a major road in Germany or from a major road in France to a minor road in Germany, but not from a minor road in France to a minor road in Germany?

The Plus maps

Please excuse my ignorance. What are "the Plus maps"? Are these the same as the Western European maps?

In the TomTom V5 Maps, there are 2 versions for each country.

There is, for example, the Great_Britain Map (which covers GB only), and the Great_Britain-Plus Map, which covers at Street Level GB plus the Major Roads of Western Europe.

Therefore if you had the Germany Plus Map, you could travel from GB and through France, on the Major Roads, and then at the German border you would have Street Level navigation.

All the Countries in Western Europe have a Basic and a Plus Map.

Thanks for that, explains it well, much like my old Garmin, I just load the places I am going and the basemap gets me there, then I have the fine detail of the place I visit. This and the ability to use this program with a Mac seems to point to a good deal to have a Tom Tom One

Thanks, OldBoy, that's very clear. That sounds like an advantage which version 5 maps have over version 3.

We're still not clear why one can't seamlessly navigate between countries if one has the necessary maps on a large capacity SD card. TomTom have obviously done the necessary programming in order to get it working on the GO 700. Have they left that part of the code out of the program included on the ONE?

Surely TomTom will have to install the new SiRF Star III chipset into their 500 and 700 Go version after reading this forum and others SiRF Star III seems to be a dramatic improvement!

Any news on this yet? as i'm going to be looking at buying a tomtom go 700 in a couple of weeks.

The Go 700 has the necessary memory and processor speed to be able to cope with having the map of the whole of Europe loaded at once. Nor do they have the necessary space afforded to them by having an internal hard drive.

It's not a coding issue, just down to storage and processing power.

Well the Go 500 has the same processor, and storage wouldn't be an issue with a 4gb SD card (assuming it can address these larger cards), and the ONE is only 20Mhz short at 380 Mhz - which is probably more than made up for by not having the Bluetooth audio support.

I suspect the decision is nothing more than a marketing one - TomTom can presumably sell more Go 700's this way and also pick up more sales for the individual country maps. The only advantage the 700 has over the 500 is the seamless routing, there'd be no reason to buy the 700 if you could do it with the 500 if the maps were made available.
I would imagine that if you could copy the 700's map data off onto a large enough SD card it would work without too many problems in both the 300/500 and the ONE.

So they are, now that's very cheap, definitely going to hurt i3 sales!

Great for the end user, but these guys selling this product at such a silly low price is Devaluing an excellent product into the realms of Bargain Basement, and the Independants that currently support the market with specialist knowledge and a genuine interest in the products.

All that this will do is drive the independents into the sea and hurrah another market dominated by another faceless corporation, and once they have wasted the sat nav market. Here's how to test my theory. Drop into your local Argos, Tesco's, Halfords (especially Halfords) and ask one of the salespeople behind the counter for some advice on your sat nav system, I am sure this is the look you will get 8O

Whilst as an end user I think that the price drops are great from a consumer point of view, take a step back and take a look at the bigger picture, take a look at the right hand side of this web page, I dont see Argos or one of the High Street's sponsoring these pages, and the reviews section is very much supported by the same people...

Once the bubble has burst on the Sat Nav scene and you can pick one of these up for £49.99, The hig street will not be interested and walk away from all of this, and do you think that there will be anyone left to pick up the pieces?......

I couldn't agree more and whenever I am asked by a novice where they should shop I point them in the direction of a specialist who can provide the necessary support.

If there is a £5 or 10 difference then it is easy to encourage people in this way but assuming this Argos offer is genuine then no-one is going to spend and additional £55 for support they may or may not need.

This is a lesson to be learned from,If you deal with any retailers they will dump your price,To them its about shifiting a box at any cost.
The only chance you have is like Sony or Microsoft where they give the retailer around 3-5% margin max this stops them from dumping the price as they have no margins to do this.
The trend as you can see from people like Dell and Bose is that they will not supply any retailers as they do not want their products to get dumped.
What I found totally disgusting to read on the BBC website yesterday was Dixons(DSG) warning people to be wary of buying electrical products from internet sellers as they have a high chance of going bust and you will end up loosing.
What they ment is that small internet resellers are killing their sales and they will say anything they can to stop people from buying form these guys.
Tell me if any employee working in store in Dixons knows his arse from his elbow regarding any Navigation products in depth?
Classic example was a guy went into Comet to buy a Drivesmart system,The stupid guy on the shop floor told him it would only work in conjunction with a PDA! Evil or Very Mad
The guy called us up and ended up buying directly from us!Laughing Out Loud :D

well the company I work for wouldnt buy any sat nav from argos ,no matter what they charged for it.
Our engineers were all recently equipped with sat nav from one of pocket gps sponsors, after a trial unit bought from Hmmmm.cough hal... had a glitch, the muppets at hal.. were utterly useless no back up whatever.
Yep the deal at argos, will no doubt be snapped up,but people will learn the hard way that from argos, they aint going to get any help when the inevitable glitch crops up.

Apparently it's 20% off all Satnav at Argos at the moment. Garmin i3 is down to 159.99 (199.99 list price) too. I think it's worth a punt buying from there, as you get to try it out for 16 days and return it if you don't like it. If the "inevitable glitch" crops up, you have Tomtom or Garmin support. Personally I've had no problems with my GO, and when my BT GPS gave up the ghost I just posted it back to Tomtom for a replacement.
