Map display lag with NO POIs

I get a significant lag in position with or without the map display turned on. I have no POIs displayed and no custom POIs installed. In fact in most cases, after driving for about 100yards my position does not move at all.

Minimizing TT (using a hardware button configured to OK/Close) and restoring TT seems to clear the problem but for only a few yards and then it stops updating again.

Going into Preferences I can see that my position data is being updated from my BT EMTAC Crux II so TT is still getting my position data it just can't display it.

Without this being fixed TT5 is totally useless to me!

Hardware? What other software is running?

Hardware is an HP iPAQ 6340.
GPS is Emtax Crux II bluetooth.

No other software is running.
