Anybody heard about a new version of Mapsonic (not just a new V3.x)? I had a message from customer service and saw an indication in a viamichelin newsletter a few weeks ago that something may be out in mid-Nov. (Don't ask - I've had a look through my inbox, but can't find it).
Couple of things I'd like to see:
- Sort out the mph/kmh time to go calculation.
- Display street names/towns in the close/far navigation view
... and some others, I'm sure

Take a look at this thread
Of course, this only refers to map data not to software upgrades.
How long did it take to get from version 2 to version 3, and was it worth it ??? |

Martike,
Thanks for the pointer - the reply you received from VM seems to indicate that in mid-Nov there will be a software update in addition to the map update ...
In reply to your message, we would like to inform you that our map data is updated once a year with each new version by our partner TeleAtlas.
The current cd ViaMichelin Navigation 3 includes the map data from end 2004.
A new version with a map update will be available mid November 2005.
On time taken from V2 to V3 - I don't know. I have only ever been a V3 user.
Regards, |

I first bought Mapsonic (or is it Viamichelin Navigation ?) towards the end of 2004. It was version 2.5 so I suppose it'd already been on the market for some time. Version 3 appeared around the middle of 2005.
So on this schedule I don't think you can expect any significant upgrade (i.e. a major release up to version 4, rather than a minor release to 3.x) for a while yet. I expect the November release will be just map data although they may bundle it together with some patches. We'll just have to wait and see what goodies they may have in store for us. |

just go to the web site and download the 3.x patches. I just check the site regularly - I've never had a single email from via michelin.
V4 should be out this week though - although with gps companies it pays not to hold your breath! _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

I just did a search on "ViaMichelin Navigation 4" and found this on a French website which I transalted using Google. For the more educated amongst you here is the link http://www.gpsandco.com/articles/newsitem.php?id=4201
The French editor will launch soon the new version of his software of navigation for PDA Palm OS and Mobile Windows , namely version 4.
With the program of the innovations:
· Mobile Compatibility Windows 5
· Management of the transborder routes
· 26 new categories of POI (1 million Points of Interests as a native)
· Management of the contacts of the PDA
· Function of immediate avoidance
· Possible telephony function in navigation mode
· Seek by postal code everywhere in Europe
· Warning signal of speed limit
· Choice of the language for the interface of the chart
· Posting portrait/paysage
· History of the 10 last destinations.
The version France on memory board SD Plug & Drive plus CD-Rom containing France, the Benelux countries, Luxembourg and Switzerland, is sold 149 € and 99 € in update for the owners of version 3.
The version Europe, only on CD is sold 199 € and 149 € in update.
This new version will be available as from semi November.
Looks like the special deal will be a €50 discount on the rrp making it about £100 here in the UK, but that will presumably give us new maps as it available on CD only.
Some useful features such as last 10 destinations and cross border routing (unless it as it is now and simply will go across borders providing they are on the same map)
Another website www.ppcreviews.net/news_8270.html suggests that there will also be the facility to get a warning if you exceed a pre-set speed limit and it will allow avoids |

Interesting to see as well that on the product page (http://www.shop.viamichelin.co.uk/shopexd.asp?catalogid=704) for the new standalone product from viaMichelin that it encouraqges registration in order to get special offers on software and cartography updates - Available in 1 week. I suspect v4 for PDAs will probably be available in the same time frame |

Having viewed various German and French pages, I am a bit disspointed that the discount for those who already have the software only appears to amount to €50. I would have thought they could be a bit more generous for registered users. |

3 was free for those that purchased 2.5.
BUT 3.0 didn't have updated maps. All gps companies charge for new maps - they have to pay for the map data - so do we.

Are you actually calling me an arse?
I was only saying that €50 wasn't much of a discount for existing registered users. I never suggested it should be free.
If you were calling me an arse, I would suggest that you learn how to behave on a public forum. |

I too feel that a €50 discount is insufficient especially as for many of us we have had v2.5 for less than 12 months, and for those who bought 3.0 as opposed to upgrading from 2.5 even less time. If TomTom can provide v5 complete with new maps for €50 against a new purchase price of €199 then why can't viaMichelin? |
