I seem to recall that you can copy programs/games etc if it is for your own personal use, ie backup. Anyway thats what I`ve read on some gaming forums, and dont really see why copying maps should be different as long as you dont make copies to sell on or give to other people. Thats when it would become illegal. If the voice prompts are on the card then I would like to back up and maybe introduce my own voice prompts onto it. Also get rid of some of the Garmin poi`s and generally be able to personalise my i3. |

the 'personla use' argument is not actually valid by all accounts...
basically, you have to read the licence agreement - if it says you can make a back-up copy then you can, if not then it's tough luck!

you can't pirate a cd cos you have to have bought a cd player in the first place... hmm... |
No it's more like you can't pirate a printer driver cause you need the printer to use it.

Oh. Didn't realise.
BTW, Garmin say I CAN back it up (but they don't say how):
We have in the office tried backing up a card and it did work however this
is not something we support. There are certain copy right issues however I have been informed that one back up can be made for personal use.
So if you wish to do this then fine however Garmin will not provide any
support on this subject.
If in the unlikely situation that the maps were wiped from the card and the
unit is past the 1 year warranty then the cost would be £91.80 inc VAT. |

I don't understand this part - you appear to be contradicting yourself. What cards did you put where? |

I have tried it with my own Original tranflash card supplied by Garmin and can confirm it does work 100% :D |
That was a little unsafe don't you think? You removed the data from your card then replaced it? What if it hadn't worked!
Anyway, if your method only works for the original card, you are obviously not copying absolutely everything, so depending on what gets corrupted, you may not be able to restore it.
My new card and reader are in the post, so I will have a play when I get them and let you know how I get on. As I said above, Garmin told me it IS possible (mind you maybe they were using the same card or one of their special ones - they weren't too clear). |

Read a license agreement? Isn't that like reading a manual? It's strictly forbidden! |

It's an absolute ripoff and should be illegal. At the most you are paying for a new transflash card (20 quid) and 5 minutes of someone's time (most definitely not worth the remaining £71.80!) |

As it's in a special format, some utilities may be required. |

I had been messing about with the card for a few hours before that and was 99.999% that doing what i did would work. If it hadn't then thats life i would have had only myself to blame, someone had to try it anyway!
Just copying the folder that i copied isn't copying everything , but at least it's a start, it backs the map, poi and voice data up, better than backing nothing atall up. _________________ Garmin Streetpilot i3,

I'm not too sure whathappened to my Magellan. All I know is it restarted when the car battery terminal came loose and presented me with "NO BASE MAP! STARTING UPLOAD!" No buttons did anything. Apparently many Magellan models do this. Not sure about Garmins though - maybe I'm worrying about nothing. |
