All this about a copied SD Card working when you press the BACK button
is rubbish.
Try this. Remove your SD Card all together now try switching on and press and HOLD the back button.
The base european maps are on the I3 not the card.
Regarding copying the SDCard. I had a few thoughts last night. I'm pretty sure I could do it if I really put my mind to it. |

As it seems Garmin have not linked the SDCard to the individual I3 seems copied cards could be sold in an illegal manner.
I dont want to insult Garmin. Im not interested in creating ilegal software and not interested in telling anyone else how to create it either.
So having got most of the way through understanding what they have done with these SDCards Id better stop.
If I get a fault with my SDCard I will just have to have faith that Garmin will cover that under the 12 month warantee |

Neither am I but I don't see why I shouldn't create a back-up for my own purposes. I don't know what the read/write life of a transflash card is, or if it's particularly prone to write errors, and tho in theory the idea of going back to Garmin to get a replacement card is sound, the quoted mail a bit up the thread doesn't actually say that they'll offer a replacement in the event of a problem when the backup question is raised.
Incidentally, I had problems reading the card earlier - but I've just got a blank transflash with a SD adaptor and that has allowed me to copy the various files and folders off the Garmin card. Would seem the reader I was using before was causing the problems. |

Id be surprised if the reader was causing the problem.
The I3 SD card is not formatted in the standard way.
There are hidden sectors on it.
Backing up the SD Card might give some backup but there is as much data NOT stored on the SD as there is on the SD.
The I3 will work with no SDCard. Base European maps and software are on the I3 not the card.
All the Card holds is
1) Region Detail Maps.
2) Garmin Shipped POIs
3) Your POIs
4) Voice files.
With reference to other topics. Try using your Garmin I3 with no
SD-Card. Because the Garmin does not have all the roads then it does not try to correct its location by referencing road locations.
You find that it thinks your driving 100ft or more from the road you are actually on. |

Yep, I figured that out (unlike the Quote button! )
Also seems to hold the last known position info as I suddenly found myself 8000 miles away from the UK whilst the thing was looking for satellites when I removed the card.
I tried the transflash cards out of two different i3 and it would read neither. For some reason I didn't try swapping the cards between units and seeing what happened. |

I have discoverd how to back up and restore the ORIGINAL transflash card, but you can ONLY restore the files to ORIGINAL transflash card supplied by Garmin, it will not allow you to copy the data to any other transflash card. :D
I have tried it with my own Original tranflash card supplied by Garmin and can confirm it does work 100% :D _________________ Garmin Streetpilot i3,

I have sent a message to the moderators to ask if i can, even though it's 100% legal that i can see and dosen't allow you to copy it to another card so no pirate copies can be created i just wanted to see what the moderators thought first.
i wouldn't want to cause any trouble for pocketgps! _________________ Garmin Streetpilot i3,

You sure about that.
Mine still seems to know where I am (nearest 100ft) if I remove SDCard. |

I would not try hacking the SDcard or telling everyone how to restore original cards. If you use your original SDcard you will be able to restore the map files and presumablly also be able to update it to the V8 map files from Garmin website without too much trouble, when they become available.
Go hacking it and telling everyone how to do it and I dont think Garmin will be as keen to make V8 maps downloadable from the web site as they might otherwise have been |

Yes thats all i've done to be honest is restore the original card, but i suppose it could be useful if the map data e.c.t ever did became corrupted.
Like you say, it might make Garmin think about the map updates if it's common knowledge how to do it, less said the better i think! _________________ Garmin Streetpilot i3,

With no card in it, it lost the satellite fix and took ages searching for a lock - meanwhile it was telling me I was 8000 mile from home - dunno where I was tho ;) Put the card back and I found myself in Hyde Park whilst it locked on. |
