1. Connect i3 to PC using USB cable
2. Start xImage
3. Wait until device is found then click Next
4. Select 'Send Images to GPS' then click Next
5. Ensure Image Type is Splash Screen & click Next
6. Browse to folder containing image called 'Splash Screen.bmp' (it must be exactly that) and click OK
7. Screen is uploaded to i3 with progress being shown by blue progress bar
8. Ignore error message and click OK
9. Close xImage
10. Re-boot i3 |

Can I just add that the picture must be exactly the same size as the original & that is :220 pixels x 176 pixels with 72 pixels /inch giving you a size of 7.76 cm x 6. 21cm & saved in 8 bit. And as dougconran says the file name must be exactly as the original Splash Screen.bmp. |

So where the heck am I going wrong?
I connect i3. Start Ximage. i3 is detected.
Can then successfully upload & download the original Splash Screen.
Have tried editing the original, also creating two totally new images, using Serif PhotoPlus and even MS Paint.
Saved each time as 'Splash Screen.bmp'.
These all show properties as being 220x176x8bit but will not download to i3.
I get a message saying the "......image(s) cannot be opened or are not compatible (blah, blah, blah), no images were transferred."
At one point I DID get the progress bar followed by the message "....not responding etc". Switched everything off. Rebooted i3 but it hadn't dowloaded.
Noticed the original Splash Screen.bmp is shown as 24 bit so tried that and that don't work either!
Anybody any ideas 'cos I'm running out of 'em!?

.
Also noticed the original (24bit) is 114K saving as 8bit brings size down to 39k.

I pulled down the original, copied it to a backup and then modified it in Fireworks (3 ). Fireworks reports it as being a 24 bit bmp image and both the original and new version are 113k in size.

PS - xImage does report an error when you try and copy back the screen. Have you tried just ignoring that message and e-booting the i3? |

Tried that - doesn't do it.
Suppose I could try Fireworks (if there is a demo version I could try!). But don't see why it should make any difference. Have used Serif PhotoPlus for years for all sorts of graphics manipulation and it's never let me down. Plus it doesn't work with MS Paint either!
Can't understand why especially when the properties appear to be correct using both systems!

1. The bmp should definitely by 24 bit.
2. Although this might not help very much xImage definitely works (aside from the 'Not Responding' error message which you can ignore).
If you go to here you can download my modified screen and see if that works. Remember to (a) backup your original and (b) rename mine from splashscreen.bmp to Splash Screen.bmp |

Sorry to mislead with the 8 bit, it is 24 bit & 113kb |

Thanks dougconran.
This is ridiculous - I downloaded your bmp and it worked perfectly.
I then tried again with the ones I'd created and they both worked!!!!
Oh! the joys of windows!!!!!

This is all pretty good. Customised Splash screens and map extractions.
Some Questions.
Why does the Garmin website not list the I3 as a supported device for XImage. Doesn't look like it can damage anything , but you never know?
Shame the waypoints bit doesnt work on the I3.
If I bought a Garmin GPS and am entitled to use Ximage to extract map pictures from it - am I then entitled to publish some of those maps on my website. e.g. like a We are Here map? Never noticed anything in the document to say I cant. |
