checked my account on maplin site - it was shipped on sept 1st and i got it on the saturday 4th sept.

so, if you bought it in the first 2 weeks you're stuck with the old maps... that's a bit naff if the 15th is the definate date...

Good Afternoon,
This is the reply I have just got from Garmin?? I bought mine on 7/10/05 so they say I won't get the map update. Not what other shave been told!
Come on Garmin ... get your act together!

JonA

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

In regard to your email, units purchased after 12/10/05 will be entitled to a free update any information obtained from forums can be in taken as hear-say. The likely procedure for updating will be for the customer to send in the transflash card to us directly with a form to be completed and we will update those maps.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

So if you would like version 8 but are not entitled to it surely you can buy it at a nominal charge?

V8 only if you bought it in the last 3 weeks, seems a bit daft. Would have thought they would have at least extended this to 28 days.

I imagine anyone who bought theirs in the last 28 days but not last 21 days would be within thier rights to return it to the shop on the grounds that its faulty. Version 2.4 of software had plenty faults didn't it. Hence get an exchange for a brand new one with v8 maps and decent firmware (i.e. 2.5 onwards)

Mine was bought on the 6th!
I think I have just enough time to take it back to halfords. I advise the rest of you to take yours back to the seller if you can. I held on to it thinking that I would recieve the update.

I had a slightly different reply when I contacted Tech Support:-

Quote:

The I3 does not come with any map source on CD's you have all the map
information on the SD card. You will have to buy the new SD card from are
dealers.

I think I'll hang on a few days and take it back to Argos for replacement (it has been playing up occasionally, i.e. switching itself off - even when plugged into the cigarette lighter)... With any luck the replacement will have V8 installed.

Latest email from Garmin after quesrying last one ..... confusing eh!

Reads as though v8 has not even been released yet (and no mention of it on their website) .... but some of you say you already have it.

I must be missing something somewhere?

Regards,

JonA

"Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

In regard to your email, mapping updates are usually released every 12
months around the end of the year. There have been no announcements when/if
City Select Europe v.8 will be released and there is no cut-off date
announced.

Therefore I cannot confirm to you if you were to purchase the software
today, that you would be entitled to a free update. There is usually a month
period for the cut-off date, where-by if you purchase within a month of the
update being released, you would be entitled to a free update.

We do not even have a rough estimate of when any updates will be released
for City Select Europe and will not until such an announcement is published
on the Garmin website.

If you have any further questions please let me know."

All sounds rather odd.

I purchased mine last weekend, got v7 maps and 2.4 system.

Will email them.

Quite a few issues with maps in my area, it sometimes thinks that 1 road is actually 3 or 4 and tells me to turn onto the road I'm on, or takes t major routes and thinks it's one and tells me to stay on it (while showing me to turn off it!).

Hi,

It seems to me that there is no consistency in information being given by Garmin in respect of map updates for the i3.

I spoke to someone in their UK (Romsey) office this morning who said that version 8 would not be released until the end of the year, and that no decision had yet been made in respect of upgrades for existing users.

He was not even aware that they are already shipping units with this version already installed!

Without any guarantee of a free map update, I am also inclined to return my unit for a refund, as it appears that these are only issued annually anyway, and I don't particularly wish to start of with an already out of date product.

As good as the unit is, I would like to know NOW exactly where I stand, as I am sure others would also!

So, even Tech Support at Garmin Europe don't even know that v8 maps have been relesed!

It appears that this is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing.

I don't really mind having to buy v8 maps (if the cost is reasonable) - but hate companies who cannot give a straight answer or who mislead their customers. Although they haven't made an official statement - they have fed bits of contradictory information to a number of users (of this forum).

I think that Garmin are doing themselves some great PR damage on this one - espscially for users who have bought a large quaintity of the i3.
